I asked this at my support group and several of them said watermelon is their favorite summer treat - lots of water, plus a little sweet! Most of them eating it were at least 2 months out, I don't know when you could start...

2 C of it is the same sugar as a Snickers. It can still make you dump and it can still interfere with your wt loss. But a few cubes would be a nice treat.

Michelle, could you please quote your source or explain how 2 cups of watermelon has the same "sugar" as a Snickers bar? Are you talking about carbohydrates, glucose, fructose, or something else. I would love to have the sourcebook on that kind of information. I tried looking it up in my two books, one published by the FDA on food nutritional content data and Food Values, but was unable to verify your information. Please let me know.

I live in Florida, and it is watermelon season in June and July. I couldn't get enough of it! I had LAP RNY and have had no problems with watermelon at all. No dumping, no slowing down of weightloss. I think it is a GREAT treat. Some people are more sensitive to sugar than others. I have never dumped...........but I thought the sugar in watermelon is natural sugar, and most people don't dump on natural sugar.

Michelle, I beg to differ with you on Snickers vs 2C watermelon. I looked up both on Fitday.com. One Snickers bar (2 oz) contains 33.75g total carbohydrate (1.42g dietary fiber). 2C watermelon contains 21.83g total carbohydrate (1.52 dietary fiber). The Snickers bar also comes in at 273 calories - almost 1/2 of it from fat (14.01g). The 2 cups of watermelon - 97 calories, only 12 of it from fat (1.31g). A lot less sodium too (152mg Snickers vs 6mg watermelon).

I always thought that we were supposed to get 'so many' servings of fruit daily. I think that the difference between a candy bar and fruit is that the candy is empty calories where the fruit is loaded with vitamins and nutrients and fiber which we really need. Eating my watermelon daily has kept my pipes running smoothly. Finally I found something that works for me instead of MOM, Fiberchoice, and Smooth Moves Tea. Fruit did the trick. I eat fruit every day for my 'sweet fix' and it is healthy for me. I have fun trying different kinds that are foreign to me and found that I also love honeydew, yellow watermelon, and ugli fruit. I never ate fruit as a pre-op. Now it is wonderful. 9 months post-op, 5-10 lbs. to goal.

I have never been one to buy into Dr. Adkins view of carbs, that they area all bad. Watermelon is fruit, it is complex carbs, not processed sugar like that found in candy. For MANY years the americian heart association, as well as the cancer society have said that you need to get in your fruits and vegies each day to prevent heart disease as well as cancer (especially colon cancer). What you DO NOT need are simple sugars, or processed carbs such as found in pasta, bread, candy or anything else "man made". What my PCP told me is that the "colored fruit and vegies have trace elements that can not be gotten by the body in anyother way. So try and get colored fruits and vegies in". So, instead of regular potatos, i make dishes with sweet potatos...use things you would not otherwise think of. I just do not over do it, and I make sure that I get all of my protein in first. As far as watermelon goes, I LOVE IT. It really does not have a large amout of "bulk", meaning, if you put a peice in your mouth and chew it, you will have very little left to swallow. It is mostly made of water. Therefore, we can tolerate a large amount of it. IF you have not tried it before, I would definately suggest that you try a small amount and not push it. Some people do dump on too many natural sugars. Good luck. And remember...Dr. Adkins just had a major heart attack a few months ago. HE can't be doing everything right!!

Cheryl- I've lost 97 pounds in 3 and a half months and I eat a HUGE piece of watermelon every day. My wife kids me that I'll have to find something else to eat after the summer, when it get harder to find good watermelon. If I were you I wouldn't worry about whether the carbs are good or bad. It's healthy, you can eat plenty of it and it doesn't hurt your weight loss, so don't feel guilty about it. Good luck to you! - Mike
