Question:
Please help with my protein problem!!! I JUST came home from

the hospital yesterday (Open RNY), and it is all I can do to take 1 darn SIP of a protein drink. I have tried CIB, and other whey proetien drinks. My question is, does anyone have any other thoughts for me. I am taking my vitamins and trying very hard to sip water etc. throughout the day. Until I am feeling a bit better, do I HAVE to do the CIB? By the way, I am eating yougert wich has a bit of protein in it. Thanks in advance for all your help    — Tracy T. (posted on May 11, 2002)

I don't know what your doctor recommends and you should follow his guidelines as much as possible. Having said that, I will tell you what I had the first week home from the hospital. First, NO milk products at all - doctor's orders. I drank lots of V8 Juice, Crystal Light, water, sugar free popscicles, sugar free jello and soup that was strained so I got only the broth. But mostly it was V8. My surgeon said not to worry about protein that early after surgery - to just concentrated on the liquids. I started soft foods 12 days post-op and was quickly eating grilled fish and soft veggies. You should remember that different doctors have different aftercare plans and try to follow yours.

Congratulations, you are on the other side! I haven't had surgery yet, but my friend did. She said that SF otter pops (actually they were an off brand), were a life saver, try freezing some crystal light then putting it in the food processer. Yogurt is good, have you tried cottage cheese? My date is coming up, 6-4-02. I pray for your stoma to heal quickly. God Bless, Michelle

Don't worry about getting in your protein right now. Many doctors have their patients on clear liquids only for the first couple of weeks. You won't cause any damage to your body by not having any protein for a while. Concentrate on getting in enough liquids for the time being. If you can keep yogurt down, that's good, but no, you don't have to do CIB at all.
