Question:
I am 3 months post op and haven't dumped on anything.
I had lap RNY and I have tried sugar and I eat bread, pasta and things that most people dump on. I'm not complaining but I was hoping to not beable to eat sugar because that is my weakness. I know I'm very lucky but I do try very hard to avoid sugar. Has anyone esle not dumped on anything? — Bonnie S. (posted on April 12, 2002)

Bonnie,
As of writting this to you I have not. (Nor has my husband, Ron.)
We both had our surgeries on 1-17-02 by Dr. Schram.
I'm down 40# and Ron is at 54#. We just had our 3 month appointment
thius past Wednesday. We had also had blood drawn for nutritional
testing and the results for us both were GREAT! Dr. Schram was very
happy with us both and asked if we'd had any problems with any foods.
We told him "No. Not at this point." We also went on to tell him
that we
didn't want to push the envelope and try to dump. It doesn't sound
very pleasant to either of us.
We enjoy going to support group meetings and have found through
going about some reallt good sweet treats to have that DON'T
cause any dumping.
Write us and we can fill you in!
Isn't it great being on the other side!

You don't list your surgery - you will only dump of you had the RNY (or the
rare BPD), you won't if you had a BPD/DS or VBG. You may not have had
enought sugar/fat to make you dump - and I don't suggest trying it
"just to see". It will happen accicentally soon enough.
Everyone's "Dump-o-meter" is set differently. For sugar early on
it may be 3-6 grams, mine is more like 15 now. One Hershey kiss probably
won't do it, and your pouch is still so small that you can't eat much
volume to get those sugar/fat grams in. I remember early on one woman
complained/bragged how she never dumped and could eat anything. Then she
ate a LOT of sugar on a binge and found out what dumping was really about.
She thought 2 cookies not making her dump meant she wouldn't on anything.
SHe learned the horrible truth. SOmetimes my tolerance is higher or lower
depending on the concentration of sugar, and whatever else I have eaten.

And then there are people who just don't dump, ever, on either
sugar OR fat.

PS - people don't DUMP on pasta and bread, they just feel crappy
after eating them, cause they swell or eat too much. It is mistakenly
_called_ dumping. REAL dumping is a different thing - a physiological
reaction to too much of a tasty thing. Insulin rushes in too fast, heart
pounds, head gets light and diahreha is imminenet.

I am 6 months post-op and haven't dumped on ANYTHING either. I know the
frustration you're feeling. I hoped this surgery would make me eat
healthier by negative reinforcement. Unfortunately, it hasn't. It's up to
us. Good old willpower. I'm having a problem with this too. It feels
like I never had any surgery (except I do get full feeling if I eat too
much). just keep reminding yourself of what you went through and how good
you feel with the weight loss (that's what I'm trying to do). Good luck

I'll be 3 months postop 4-17-02 and don't dump on anything.
I was hoping not to tolerate sugar anymore. I do have a problem with
sandwiches it's always too much with the bread and meat together.
