Question:
I really need some ideas on making protein drinks tastier
I cannot stand the protein drinks or bars. Do any of you have some great recipes with the protein shakes you will share? Or is there somewhere I can go to get some ideas? — [Anonymous] (posted on January 21, 2002)

Have you tried adding fruit to it? Vitalady.com sells samples online if
you are interested in trying some different. I drank the extreme pure
protein with crushed ice. It kinda tastes like crystal light. Now I am
drinking a hot choc. protein drink called cocoa supreme drink mix. It is
made my protein rich. It really works for me. I hope this helps.

Try mixing it with sugar-free pudding, sugar-free hot chocolate, or
sugar-free Carnation Instant Breakfast. Mixing in your fat-free powdered
milk will boost your protein intake too. I don't like powdered protein
drinks, I drink pre-mixed Mayoflex or pre-mixed Isopure (similar to Crystal
Light), and I eat Mayoflex or Pure Protein bars, they aren't too bad, lol,
you can kinda even get used to them.

I use Designer Whey, French Vanilla. I mix 1 1/2 to 2 scoops with
Strawberry Kiwi (Crystal Light), it is delicious.

I dont do protein shakes very often--just in a pinch. I hate most all of
them. What I did was go to wal-mart and buy flavorless powder. Then I
played around and made shakes that I liked sans the powder. I tried a lil
cocoa---20 calories, light sugar and carbs, coffee, nutrasweet and half a
serving of powdered milk, ice and added the flavorless powder. It is
important to used a powder with NO CARBS because you will pick up about 7
or 8 through the cocoa and half a serving of powdered milk. A friend I know
even adds a lil chocolate protein powder to hers now. Good luck and happy
experimenting!

Like the previous poster, I bought the "flavorless" powder
(actually it does have a taste but not like chocolate or vanilla). I use
the MLO milk and egg protein. It tastes kind of like non-fat dry milk. I do
sometimes make shakes, in fact made some for my daughter and I the other
morning: 2 cups ice, 1 container of plain yogurt, frozen strawberries, a
banana, 2 scoops of protein powder, wheat germ (has a great graham cracker
taste), and lots of Splenda. It tastes good (if my 3-year old likes it . .
. :)<P>Think outside the blender, tho! I also mix protein powder with
cream of wheat (you could use oatmeal as well). Just make it with a little
extra liquid (I use milk for extra protein) and stir a scoop right in when
it's ready to eat. I like that with a pat of butter and cinnamon sugar or
splenda. (my daughter likes this too!) You can also add it to cream soups.
I like the unflavored powder because you really can't taste it and it mixes
just as well with salty stuff as with sweet.

OH I FORGOT! The smoothie recipe: You also add milk or orange juice to get
it to the right consistency. It makes a lot, so I usually freeze the rest
as "smoothie pops." You can get the little popsicle forms at the
dollar store. Good luck!

I have not had surgery yet, but I remember long ago on one of those diets I
was on - I used chocolate protein powder, (about 2 scoops) mixed it with
just enough water to make it really thick - like a thick pudding, then add
a small can of crushed, drained pineapple (the kind in its own juice).
Drop by teaspoons on wax paper lined plate and freeze! I don't know how
frozen stuff will work for the new tummys - but it is really good.

I was struggling with this also. I couldn't stand the powder protein.
I went to GNC and found a wonderful drink. It is called
DESIGNER WHEY PROTEIN BLAST...flavors are Kiwi STRONGberry
or ORANGE PASSION FIT. I prefer the Kiwi, but will drink both. They have
them in 34grams protein and also 17grams protein.
And they taste wonderful...sorta like Crystal Lite. And they are
pre-mixed...so that is a BIG PLUS for me.
I had been on a plateau for 3 weeks...and I started drinking these...and my
weight has dropped 10lbs in 14 days. I usually have one for breakfast.
Here's the nutritional scoop on them.
Calories: 140
Total Fat: 0
Cholesterol: 0
Total Carbs: 2g
Sugars: 2g
Protein: 34g (or 17g, depending on the one you buy)
Riboflavin: 0.25mg
Calcium: 160mg
Magnesium: 27mg
Sodium: 60mg
Potassium: 220mg
They can be rather spendy...the 34mg protein is $3.49/20oz bottle...17g
protein is $2.49/20oz bottle.
But I feel for myself it is very worth it...what would I be spending for
breakfast or lunch anyway. I also don't have them everyday, One day I may
have a protein bar, the next day, the protein drink.
Anyway, hope this helps. And..."HAPPY DRINKING!"

Hi. I found THE BEST protein bars. They're called EAS AdvantEdge Card
control nutrition bars. They're a little hard to find. You can type in
your zip code on their web site and they'll tell you where you can find
them in your area. They just happened to have them at Walmart where I live
for only $1.50 a bar vs. the normal $1.99 a bar. The only 2 flavors I like
are Blueberry (bad aftertaste though) and cookies and cream (thought it
sounded gross but tastes delicious!). It reminds me a little of fudge and
makes me feel like I'm eating a candy bar. They have only 2g of carbs, 5
g of fat, 210 calories and 24 gr of protein. Wonderful for a quick lunch!
Try one, I think they're wonderful.

I had a very hard time finding a protein mix I could tolerate, but
perseverance paid off. Now I order unsweetened "Vanilla Pleasure"
from www.revivalhealth.com. It's a soy product that comes in single-serving
packets. I mix one packet into 8 oz. boiling water, 4 oz. Lactaid milk, 1
T. decaf coffee crystals, and lots of Sweet 'N' Low. I shake it in the
shaker that came with my first order, and drink it on the way to work every
morning. This mixture gives me 24 g. protein, which really helps me reach
my 50 g. goal every day. Good luck!

I love my protein shakes (I get the from vitalady.com) and I also mix them
in a variety of different ways. I do not use any form of milk products nor
do I use any form of fruit juice or fruit (orange juice or just plain
fruit). My favorite one is Pro-Score 100 chocolate. I mix 2 scoops (33
gms) w/8 oz of water and mix w/hand mixer. Then the rest of the day I mix
Optimum Vanilla Whey 1 scoop (22 gms) mix w/6 oz of crystal lite or
flavored water (no sugar, no calories, no sodium) and I make sure the
carbonation is gone and hand mix it with ice cubes. Try to avoid mixing
the protein with hot liquids as this causes bacteria to build up and also
you could get a break down in the protein too. I hope this helps.

I use the Carb Solutions premixed protein drinks, from Walmart. I usually
chop up 4-5 ice cubes in the blender, then blend in one bottle of whatever
flavor I am craving, and 3-4 T. instant coffee. Its awesome! My favorite is
made with the chocolate one. Tastes like a rich, creamy iced cappuccino. No
need for extra sweetening. Try it, theyre excellent! And very filling, too.

I simply use Twin Labs which can be bought at any Rite Aid, drug store,
wal-Mart, Krogers or Meyers. I get the Chocolate, Vanilla and the Banana
Strawberry SUpreme. It only has 100 calories, no sugar and no carbs or fat.
WHat I do to make mine tastier (though they are good on their own) is
varied. Let me give you some ideas.
1. Mix the shake with milk as directed. Add one cup of orange juice and
1/2 cup more milk. Mix vigerously while adding a handfull of ice. Awesome
Orange Creme cooler!! I also add 3 tablespoons of dried milk to up the
protien content.
2. Chocolate... this is really yummy. I mix as directed, add in a
chocolate package of carnation instant breakfast, 3 tablespoons dried milk,
and 1/2 cup chocolate pudding (already made up)(and if I am feeling really
daring, I add a few frozen strawberries!) Add a few cubes of ice and puree
it! And it is YUMMY!!! I have a whole book of recipies like this... I will
post them on my web page tomorrow, and if you want to copy them, feel
free!! I gotta go to bed now, though... my eyes are sticking together!!LOL
PS. It takes me an hour to drink my shakes and I feel no hunger pains for
the rest of the day, they satisfy me so intensly!!!

I have a drink that I make every morning it tastes good to me!
I use 1 pkg. Carnation Instant Breakfast (no sugar added),
1/2 c. of Food Club egg substitute, 1/2 scoop Genisoy natural
flavor powder. Every other day I use 1/2 a banana or a couple
of spoonfuls of Cool Whip Free topping. I blend it up with
my hand blender. I put in a few ice cubes to chill it up.
When totals are counted up it is about 30 grams of protein!
