Question:
What is the story with watermellon, cantaloupe, and honeydew, Can I have them?
I just got home from surgery and really want some juicy fruit. Can I have Watermellon, cantaloupe and honeydew? If so, is it considered food or water, and how much can I have? — Janet C. (posted on November 20, 2001)

I love watermelon and have eaten alot of it during my first nine weeks
post-op. Be carefull as watermelon will give you alot of gas. If your gas
is now easily coming out as mine, no problem. If your gas tends to get
cramped inside of you, you should take it slow and try a little at first. I
also eat alot of cantalope because like the watermelon it goes down easy
and is a easy way to get alot of fluids ( water ) into my system. Without
watermelon I may only urinate three times per day and be very strong in
nature, with the melons my urination will increase to seven maybe eight
times per day. I would only be careful if your a gassy person.
PS: the melon system does work, nine weeks post op and down 51 pounds.
Horray for us. I also drink a protein drink for breakfast every day 30
grams of protein and eat 10 shrimp per day for lunch or dinner getting
another 30 -40 grams of protein.

Three years post-op. I have always eaten watermelon...it was one
of the first "solid" foods I ate and I continue to have some
almost
daily. It tastes good and is easy to digest. I also eat cantaloupe and
honeydew. At your stage, make sure these are cut up and that you
chew chew chew....also make sure you don't eat the seeds of any melon.
I've
never had any problem with gas when I eat melon.

I had the rny and eat lots of watermelon and canteloupe. I have never had a
problem with it. If you feel the urge to snack it is great because you can
eat more of it since it is mostly water but it is still good for you. I
think I like it so much, though, because I always used to drink a lot when
eating and now I can't :(

I've always loved watermellon although I "think" it has a high
sugar content. However I don't feel sick on it so I may be wrong. I was
scared as some seeds accidently went down. But evidently the opening going
out of the pouch was big enough as I had absolutely no problems with the
"stray seeds". lol. Did worry me though.

Ever the voice of doom. I LOVE watermelon! Yum. It has 25g of sugar in 2C.
Same as a Milky Way. And yes, fructose CAN mess with your wt loss. RNY do
not process sugars the same as we once did, but ANY sugars will mess with
us, whether or not we dump. So, watermelon is not a no-no, just approach
with caution. The other melons are not quite as high in sugars, but they
are more dense, so you don't eat as much. Watermelon is so thin that you
can pack down quite a bit without feeling a thing. My first experience with
it was the D word, massively, painfully. Next time I tried it, I did dump
from it. Didn't know the actual sugar count then. I still do eat it, but
not with abandon.
