Question:
How long should I expect to be off work with LAP RNY?

I attended a seminar in Dallas on WLS and the doctor said that people are off work 2 - 6 weeks with the average being 3 weeks. It just depends on which procedure you have and whether or not you have any complications. I am having open RNY in October and my doctor told me he would like me to be off work for 4 weeks.

I had my surgery (open RNY) on 14 Aug and was off for a full 3 weeks. I am back to work 1/2 days this fourth week. I could go all day, but since I have the leave I'm taking it easy. I could not have come back during the 3rd week.

I had open RNY. I was off for four weeks. I have a sit down job. If you have a more physical job it may be longer.

Hi Mary, I just had my surgery 8-27-01 and I have a strenuous job. My doctor told me that I should be off of work for 8 weeks, but that I could go back on a 1/2 day schedule as soon as I wanted to. He told me to remember that I am going to be much more tired than I normally am and that I should really take it easy. I think I could go back in 3 weeks though.

I had lap RNY on 6/26/01. I started working again after 3 weeks but boy was I exhausted. I didn't really feel like "myself" until about 6 weeks out.

I returned to a full-time office position 8 days after my lap RNY; my daughter went back to a full-time position as a preschool teacher 14 days post-op lap RNY. We did just great and experienced no problems other than feeling more tired than usual at the end of the day. It's important to accept that everyone will experience different levels of pain tolerance and ability to return to a fully functional status. Listen to your body....it will tell you when you're ready to increase your activity. Give yourself plenty of opportunities for extra naps and early bedtimes if possible...accept any help that is offered you by friends and family...try not to over-do. Patients who have laparascopic surgery are often tempted to do too much, too soon, simply because they generally have much less pain post-op than "open" surgery patients. Remember that although the work on the "outside" is less dramatic, the work on the "inside" is exactly the same....lap or open, it's still a "major surgery". Be good to yourself in those early days, you're going to have the rest of your life to reap the benefits of this surgery :-) Best wishes!

I had surger on 3/23 and was back at an office job on 4/4/2005. I could have come a bit earlier, but my energy levels were still such that a mid day nap did me much good. Heck I could still use one, but I'm doing OK.
