Question:
Can I have cereal?
I am about 15 weeks post-op (Lap RNY) and I would like to have a small bowl of Special K (one of those travel boxes). Do you think that would be a problem? I don't dump on anything, but I also don't want to start down a bad path. The ceral with 2 cups of 1% milk, is about 20 proteins, which, for me, is good for breakfast. I have not been really concerned with counting my proteins up until now, but I want to ensure that I am getting all that I need because I am young and want to stay healthy. Any advise or information is most appreciated. — Michelle K. (posted on August 15, 2001)

I enjoy cereal for breakfast - and I always make "healthy" cereal
choices. If you don't have a problem with the milk, I would think it would
be fine but you could always check with a nutritionist. I try to make sure
I limit my carbs in my other meals on the day I have cereal for breakfast.

I occasionally eat Special K, but not as much as what you describe. I eat
just a small amount with a little milk. One of those little boxes would
probably be enough for 2 bowls. I also eat Special K with cottage cheese.
1/4 cup of that has 13 grams of protein. It sounds gross, but it tastes
good IF you like cottage cheese . . .

I eat Special K often for breakfast. However, I do not count the protein
grams in the milk since I was told not to drink with my meals. I put skim
milk in the cereal but pour out the milk that remains in the bowl when I am
through eating. The cereal itself has 7 grams of protein per serving.

Cereal eaten with milk makes me dump: bloated and very gassy. Yuck. I used
to like to snack on it dry but...now I am geting VERY concerned about carbs
and am seriously thinking of doing atkins to shake myself off a nearly five
MONTH plateau! I love the idea of the portion control of the little cereal
packs though.........Best of luck to one and all! Lisa in NY
