Question:
concerned wtih calories in protein drink
I am 5 days post op and started the infamous protein drinks that we all know and love. i got one drink that is called "Zero Carb Isopure" two scoops is 0gfat, 50 g protein and 200 calories. I am concerned with the calories? Is this high? Normal? what is considered normal? Any advice would be great! — Jennifer L. (posted on July 18, 2001)

There are 4 calories for every gram of protein, so 200 calories for 50
grams of protein would mean you are only getting calories from the protein,
no excess. That sounds like a great protein supplement. If possible, drink
it in two batches, not all at once. You will only absrb 30 grams of protein
at once so if you drink it all in one sitting you will get eighty calories
from protein that you will just excret in your urine anyway.

I keep reading that we can only absorb 30 grams of protein a sitting... but
only on message boards. I cannot find anything to support this 'message
board fact' anywhere else. I just want to make sure that this is true.
The Isopure protein powder is the best... tastes excellent with NO grit
whatsoever. A 3 lb cannister runs $26 at my local heath food store. As far
as the calories... I too was concerned, but just make sure you arent
fattening up your shake with too much stuff like yogurt, an excess of milk
or lots of fruit. I mix one heaping scoop with only a half a cup of skim
milk, one third a banana and 6 ice cubes in the blender. When I first
started drinking them I used too much fruit and was adding half a cup of
yogurt to a full cup of milk... way too many calories for one meal! I have
been only using one rounded scoop because of the possibility of only
absorbing 30 grams at a time. You are on the right track though!
