Question:
I was wondering if post ops can eat fruit. If so are there any you shouldn't eat?

I was thinking that maybe the natural sugars in fruits like apples, bananas and berries , and sweet melons might cause dumping in a RNY patiant. I hope not cause I love fruits    — Jennifer M. (posted on July 14, 1999)

Fruit does cause me to dump, but dumping to me anymore is simply diahhrea for a few minutes. Then it is gone. No pain, or sweats, or nauseated feeling.

I don't know how far alone post-op you are but I am just about 5 months and I eat fruit all the time. Actually, that is what my breakfast usually consists of. I can eat just about any kind of fruit. I also eat the 8-1/4 oz cans of DelMonte Fruit Pleasures, raspberry flavored peaches are my favorite. At first I ate a 1/2 can at a time but now I can just about eat the whole can, it takes a while but it is delicious!!!!! Keep up the good work.

Fruit Juices will surely give you dumping syndrom as they're so highly concentrated, but I too am a RNY post op and I can eat small amounts of fruit at a time. I cannot eat a huge anything more than a small piece of fruit, would set off a lite case of dumping. Try it tiny bits at a time and see how you handle it. Everyone is different.

Yes eat fruit, please remember to ALWAYS target protein as your main intake at EVERY sitting. We really need it to prevent hair loss. I love bananas with peanut butter and nutrigrain waffles for breakfast. After 9 years I can eat about half. Apples with peanut butter, or cream cheese, celery with cream cheese. Fruit juices are ok, but you really should cut them in half with water. They are concentrated sugar and I still dump on any juice. Melons after a red meat meal help prevent constipation and better the bodies ability to process the red meat. Not at first, please wait 6 months to try red meat. 9 years later, I still love a great steak. just not so much. All things in moderation with the sole exception of refined sugar foods and milk (lactose is sugar!) Take Care :~)

I too eat fruit all the time and have no problem with it. Had rny on May 3. Also able to drink fruit juice (no sugar added) with no problem. I do not sub. it for my protien, and also I have no problem with skim milk. But some people do, I think you just have to test out for yourself by eating small amounts to see what you can eat. Good Luck!!

I am 15 months post-op and I eat fruit all the time. I eat most all fruits and have since about 2 months post-op. I ate bananas even earlier than that. I love melons, strawberries, peaches, apples and grapes. I eat them in yogurt alot too. Fruit is a big part of my diet.

You are right! Fruit does have natural sugar in it. Most people don't have problems with fruit. The problem with fruit is the carbohydrates that fruit has in it. Many people have a hard time losing weight after surgery because of to many carbohydrates. I know I had that problem. My weight loss was very slow because of it. I then cut out the fruits and vegs and lost a lot of weight fast. 64 pounds in 11 weeks. You will be able to eat fruit again, in moderation
