Question:
When I lost my hair, it came back curly.

Before I had my surgery my hair was straight and thin. I lost most of my hair my 3rd month post op now after a year my head is full of curly hair. I always wanted curly hair so I wouldn't have to perm it. I love it but it is weird. What causes this? Will it go back straight and thin?    — [Deactivated Member] (posted on November 30, 2004)

Exact same problem here. Used to have long straight hair albeit somewhat fine. After the WLS hair loss, I have all new wavy hair that is unmanageable. Truly don't know what to do with it so I'm looking foward to your responses. It sticks out on it's own unless I blow dry it after every shampoo. Definitely a new problem to deal with when you've lived 52 years with straight hair! LOL

I've always had curly hair and hated it. After WLS, I had NO hair loss. However my hair is now curlier than ever. In fact it is unmanageable so I just shave my hair off about 1/2 inch from the scalp. I'm 3.5 years out and the curls won't go away. And hair straigtener only makes it curl more. So I expect I'll be a skin head the rest of my life. ;)

I had the same situation happen. Lost alot of my thick straight hair. Came in curly, but only on each side of the back of my head, with a patch of still straight down the middle!

i like to say mine came back in with "natural stick-out". It waves out on the sides of my face and i don't like it one bit. But the back is really pretty and wavy except in my double crown area. it waves to one side.

Mine too, was just straight with a slight wave. Now it's curly. How odd! What is a mystery to me is the hair folicle at birth determines if hair will be curly or straight.

I had surgery almost 2 years ago. I had cut my hair which was always wavy right before surgery. I had always worn it long to give it weight otherwise the wave went this way and that way. After it fell out and grew back in, it was crazy so I started to straighten it. I've been straightening it for a year, and what a pain!!! Finally I went to a new stylist who said why didn't I just let it go curly? She cut it in layers to bring out the curls and I put Curls Rock by TIGI and a few spritzes of TIGI Uptight heat activated curl enhancer, turn my head over, blow dry with a diffuser and scrunch. It take 5 minutes. I throw my head up with a head full of curls that lasts all day. I've gotten so many compliments on it, and its MY natural curl! Once you get a good cut for it and learn what products/styling suits it best, it's GREAT. I fought my natural wave all my life and never thought I'd love curls but I do.

How our hair can change is so wierd. I've always had very fine, thin, straight hair and lost a good bit of it from about five months out then I started using Nioxin products and taking a double does of Biotin. Now I have thicker hair than I've ever had, it's coming back in curly, and where it was going really grey before, it's coming back in dark. I was almost totally grey on top and now it's coming in BLACK! I'm tickled, not complaining at all, it's just wierd. I also have long, strong fingernails now and I wore artificial nails for years because my nails were weak and would break easily.

I can only hope that mine will have some body to it. Pre-op, board straight, wouldn't even hold a perm more than a couple of weeks, crossing my fingers!!!!

I'm jealous of you curlie heads! Had straight thin hair as a pre-op, still have straight thin hair as a post-op...and yes, I do have to get perms..enjoy it!!

I tried to figure this one out too. Mine also came back in curly. I like it because I can flat iron it and wear it straight (although it fights it) or I can diffuse it and wear it curly. I like having the different options. The follicle is what determines how straight or curly the hair is. Straight hair comes out of a round follicle, and curly hair grows out of an oval follicle. I have pictured it as when you take a pair of scissors to gift ribbon, and run pressure along it, it curls. I am thinking..and it is just a guess.. that the oval follicle puts that kind of pressure on the hair shaft and causes it to curl. Maybe something about the way if fell out caused the follicle to shrink and become oval? I'm just full of theories...

I am curious about this too and hope I get more curl after surgery. If I have to lose hair I'd like a benefit from it. I am going to look at the curls after hair loss issue on a chemotherapy site because I do know that after chemo hair loss it is common to get curly. It would be a place to get an answer.
