Question:
Can you get a hernia from TT surgery?
I am almost 2 weeks post TT (full abdominoplasty). Just last night, I noticed a hard grape-sized knot near my navel. Could that possibly be a hernia from the TT surgery??? I never had a hernia after my open RNY. If it's a hernia, will they have to open me up again?? I go to see the surgeon on Thursday, but wanted to ask if anyone has ever had this....I've only heard about hernias after WLS not PS. Thanks! — emilyfink (posted on June 29, 2004)

I would think it is much more likely to be a seroma (fluid filled sac). A
TT does not cut into the abdominal cavity, at least in 99.9% of cases, so
there is no way it should leave a situation to cause a hernia. Most PS's
check to make sure the fasia (sp?) is intact good before closing you up as
they certainly do not want a hernia to occur after PS. If you had an open
WLS you will always be somewhat suseptible to a hernia but most likely if
you didn't get one in the first year you will be okay. Although my mom got
a hernia in her gallbladder incision 18 years after she had it removed. So
it is possible to happen in the future. I would not fret as it's likely
something very benign. I had a number of fluid filled areas that had to be
drained after my LBL and that was even with having drains for 8-1/2 weeks.
