Question:
has anyone taken water pills after plastic surgery to get rid of the swelling?
and if so did the doctor tell you to do it? — franbvan (posted on March 10, 2004)

That's funny you asked, I was on here to ask the same thing b/c I took my
first one yesterday and I was so sick and hurt so bad, I could not eat, got
cramping in my stomach, could'nt walk straight and of course I peed all day
and night lol. I was so scared, but was more scared to call and ask
someone. Today I feel better, but not normal, my pouch feels hard and
tight!?! My advice is not to take it without asking first. I was doing it
for my TT swelling b/c it will not go down. Good luck!

Almost forgot, the water pill was called "Diurex, long acting water
capsule".

My doc prescribed a couple of days of water pills in the first couple days
after surgery as my entire body swelled up like a frog (post LBL). I
wouldn't do it without my surgeon's advice though. Swelling is just
something you're going to live with for a long time, especially at the end
of the day.

I was NOT given any water pills after surgery, however if you tend to
retain water or salt perhaps your doctor would give the drug you described.
I had a lot of swelling from the anesthesia, and IV fluids that went away
in about 6 weeks, I don't see how a water pill would help with this type of
swelling. I also would find them dangerous as I was lucky if I drunk 1 cup
of water a day. I also would be afraid of cramps from low postassium
levels.

PLease talk to your surgeon first. I have not had any plastics yet, just 2
months post rny but I am on Furosemide for my water retention. I have taken
OTC meds pre-op and they can do more harm than good. The surgeons know what
they are doing and if they see a need for the medication they will give it.
Also, because of the WlS weve had not all meds are obsorbed the same, so
just talk it over with your surgeon! Good luck!
