Question:
Eggnog?? Chocolate Milk??
I am currently 16 days post op. I am finding that my taste buds are really changing. I used to love milk, but now have to force my self to drink it because it just has no flavor to me. I am wondering can we drink Fat Free chocolate milk? Also, any opinions on having a little "light" egg nog this holiday season? No alcohol just the egg nog. — Mini Gadget (posted on December 4, 2003)

Be careful with eggnog ... it may be loaded with sugar. "Light"
may reference lower fat levels not lower sugar. Try adding some flavoring
to the milk, that may help ... like cherry extract, almond, etc.

I know this probably will not help you right now...but your taste buds will
return. Early post-op my taste buds weren't quite right and everything
either tasted yucky or had no taste at all. I think it has to do with the
anesthesia. Anyway, after about 2 months my tastes did come back. I have
found I enjoy foods much more now than I ever did. I take time to spice
things up a bit. Because I can not (or chose not) to eat large quantities
and unhealthy foods. It's about the quality of food now...not the
quantity. You'll be amazed at your new life as a post-op. I am learning
so much more about myself then I ever dreamed. This surgery has done
wonders for me not only physically, but emotionally. Take care and
congrats on your journey. Kamy 3 1/2 months post-op - 75 pounds.

Make your own egg nog and use splenda. Also, if you go to the vitalady.com
website you will see that she sells falvored sugar free syrups including
chocolate, egg nog, coff and many many more. I add them to vanilla protein
and end up with high proteins shakes in different flavors. I happen to lose
the peanut butter shakes :-) My Dr had no problem with us having egg nog
post op as long as we used low fat milk and did not add sugar. Low fat
chocolate milk is not a good idea. It contains sugar and you could dump.

You can drink fat free milk,if you can tolerate milk. Lots (but not all) of
surgeons feel it is a good source of protein. Ypur taste buds will return,
but until then, try sugar-free Nesquick powder- you can find it in the
chocolate milk syrup. A little goes a long way, so taste as you add. I find
the recommended serving size much too sweet! Egg nog- I have never liked,
so I have not looked at the label. Try everything slowly, in really small
quantities. If the light is sugar-free you may be okay, if not, you may
want to avoid. Dumping is so unpleasant! Good luck to you!

I haven't looked at "light" egg nog yet but the regular stuff has
a ton of sugar like someone else said.

I've checked out the lite eggnog and it is only less fat, not sugar. As
for chocolate milk, you can use the no-added-sugar Nesquik that is good.
Someone recently told me they found LeCarb chocolate milk in a single
serving size at Super Walmart, but I haven't tried it yet. Good luck!

I hate milk too, but am willing to drink chocolate milk. I make my own,
WalMart has this off brand SF chocolate syrup that I actually prefer of the
SF NesQuik, at a lower price too.

It's not the fat in stuff I'd worry about, it is the sugar. Neslte Quik
makes sugar free mix. It's okay. I only used it once or twice.

I'm not much use to you on this (I go in for surgery on Thursday), but I do
know several ladies post-op that could only drink milk if it was chocolate.
They got some s/f syrup or just used a very small amount of regular
hershey's. Also, the egg nog would probably taste very strong to you. Try
cutting it in half (or more) with skim milk. It will *still* taste
fantastic and you won't have the same load of sugar/fat if you drank it
straight. =)

Bridget... try Carb Countdown Dairy Beverage in the chocolate flavor as it
is low carb (3gm) and high in protein (12gm)... Most WalMart SuperCenters
are carrying this product! Best wishes & God bless!!

When I am wanting chocolate milk I drink either milk with a scoop of
chocolate protein powder (designer whey is my preference) otherwise I use
sugar free carnation instant breakfast.

For a long time I used Carnation Instant Breakfast. They make it SF. Using
the full serving was always too much for me. It also gives you extra
protein. If I needed extra protein I added some powdered milk to my skim
milk and mixed it all with the Carnation Instant Breakfast. Now what I do
is put about half inch to an inch of low fat chocolate milk in with my skim
milk. It's just enough to add some flavor but not too much sugar. I
couldn't imagine not having my chocolate milk!!
