Question:
Is this shake bad for me?
I was making a fruit protien shake with powdered designer whey (natural). It consisted of : 1 banana, 5 strawberries (fresh), 6 ounces pineapple juice, and 3 scoops of designer whey protein, all this mixed with crushed ice in a blender. My question is, is this bad? Should I ditch the fruit. someone told me that the fruit and unsweet juice was way too high in carbs for me to be drinking. What is ya'lls thought on this? It has been the only protien shake that I have been able to stomach so far. — Carol K. (posted on December 4, 2003)

Your drink is loaded with natural sugars and carbs. Why not cut it down to
1/2 cup frozen fruit, water, and the designer whey. I think you will be
plesantly surprised with the result. It will be thick like a milkshake and
taste great. You definitely don't want to dump on a protein drink and all
that natural sugar could cause that to happen.

I make a shake w. the same protein powder you use and 1.5 C. skim milk and
2 envelopes of Equal each day w/ some sort of frozen fruit. I've used
blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, cherries in it. I've been doing it
each day (5 months post op next week). It's a fantastic breakfast; I have
enjoyed the fruit added to my diet. Your quantity seems a bit larger than
my intake (I use 1 scoop of p. powder) and less fruit is all. I'm down 73
lbs. in 5 mo. so the fruit doesn't seem to have hurt me.

The truth is since you are having so much trouble eating, if you can drink
this consistently it is great!<p>MOST people don't dump on fruit
sugars, but I would ditch the pineapple juice just because you probably
don't need it with the strawberry banana flavors in it. Perhaps you could
add a little NSA yogurt to it if you feel it needs a little more "RAH
RAH." The new ones available at Kroger are GREAT! The have a thin
consistency, are not overly sweet, and some in some of the best flavors
I've ever tasted in yogurt. Not to mention they are $0.33 when they go on
sale! At 80 calories a piece, they are a great nutritional bargain in my
book. Try the pina colada flavor instead of your pineapple juice. I'll bet
it's yummy!

i am going against the grain here but i think you are using way too much
fruit in one shake. And even if it is natural sugars it is too high in
sugar and carbs. Just way too much fruit. Sorry that's my 2 cents.

Personally, this many carbs, even though they're "natural" carbs
from fruit, would cause major blood sugar swings and cravings for me. Do
what works for you, but I would try and reduce the fruit.
