Question:
How long do most patients stay in the hospital after a tummy tuck?

I have looked in the data base and could not find an answer to this question. I had only an over night stay after my breast reduction. My husband is currently deployed to Iraq and the doctor Tri-Care (Military Insurance) had sent me to for my consult on the tummy tuck is over 2 hour drive from post. I am trying to plan a head. I will need someone to come stay with my kids while I am in the hospital and if I have a time frame it would be easier to make plans. Thank You.    — Kimberly V. (posted on November 17, 2003)

My plastic surgeon offers patients who do not have insurance coverage the option of having the surgery in the operating suite at his office, and going home as soon as they have awakened from the anesthesia. Patients with insurance coverage are offered an overnight hospital stay. I had insurance, and was also concerned about post-op discomfort, so I chose to have the surgery in the hospital and stay overnight. In retrospect, my panniculectomy and brachioplasty was the most "comfortable" of any surgeries that I have had, and even though this was a six hour surgery, I feel that I could have managed having it done in the office after all. Everyone's tolerance to pain, anesthesia, and pain medications is different, so let your past personal experiences and your doctor's recommendations be your guide. Best wishes!

Kimberly, I had a hernia repair/abdominoplasty so my experience may not be relevant.... My surgery was on a Tuesday, I went home from the hospital on Friday afternoon. I was not prepared how totally wiped I would be for so very long afterwards. My actual WLS was a walk in the park comparatively. Blessings, dina

I had a TT, brachioplasty and breastlift (9.5 hour operation) in a surgical center. Spent the nite and was home the next morning. I had Zero complications and was back to work parttime in 2 weeks, after the drains were removed.

HI there.. I'm about 12 days out from my TT and hernia repair.. I was overnight in the hospital.. certainly enough time there but I really did need help at home in the beginning. LIke Dina, I was not prepared for how hard this was compared to the gastric bypass. Good luck.

Kimberly, I had my tummy tuck and thigh liposuction here in Michigan at the University of Michigan. My incision goes from hip to hip and straight up, around the belly button, and almost up to the breast bone. Mine, as well as many others that I've talked to, was done outpatient. I had to be at the hospital at 9:30 a.m. and I was home by 6:00 p.m. Eight weeks prior to that I had my arms lifted and breast augmentation -- again at the U of M and again out-patient. Good luck to you!
