Question:
Is coral calcium OK?
I've been looking for calcium citrate as has been recommended on this site. However, I went to GNC and they told me that coral calcium is more easily absorbed than the citrate. It also comes in powder form. Does anyone know which is better? — Sherry B. (posted on August 4, 2003)

Get calcium citrate. I've heard that coral calcium is just another form of
calcium carbonate, fancied up and priced up. Even if it is a different
type of calcium, it hasn't been proven that it is easily absorbed by RNY
patients. Calcium citrate is proven. Your bones are too important to take
a chance. The GNC employee may be right that coral calcium is more easily
abosrbed than calcium carbonate in people with normal digestive systems.
Until someone can prove to me that it's better absorbed than calcium
citrate in RNY patients,I'm sticking with the calcium citrate. I take
chewable wafers from Twinlab. They're portable, nongritty, and taste like
Sweettarts.

if you put coral into the search box in the OH library you'll get some
rather inciteful comments on the stuff.

Vespa is correct. Coral calcium is an expensive form of calcium carbonate.
Use the citrate.

Coral calcuim is easier absorbed than regular calcuim for people who have
not had this surgery. We must have calcuim citrate. As the other posters
recommended, go to the library. There is tons of info there.
