Question:
Do any of you crave sweets? What can I do?

I am 5 weeks post op and I have started craving sweets. I never expected to crave them after surgery. I WILL NOTgive in to my cravings, but, is there anything I can have to satisify them? — Stacie B. (posted on August 3, 2003)

My advise would be to satisfy your craving. Because if you don't it will not go away. Depending on what you are craving you might be able to satisfy it with sf fudgsicle or popsicle, Edy's makes a no sugar added ice cream, sf pudding or jello. I know I didn't have this surgery to deprive myself. If I have a stong craving I usually satisfy it. But the beauty is that I can have one hersheys kiss or one cookie and I am satisfied. Before surgery it would take the whole bag. Good Luck!! **kelly

I know how you feel. What has helped me is eating my Blue Bunny Yogurt. I love it! I also love their S/F Popsicles. If you feel like you just really crave something sweet. I have tried those Detour and U-Turn bars. They're pretty big sized, so I just cut them into quarter size pieces and eat one. You get in 7.50 grms of protein and about 75 calories. They taste pretty good. I ate half of one once and I suffered the rest of the day for it. But I do fine on just 1/4 piece. At work Friday it was someone's birthday and they offered me a piece of German Chocolate Cake. I politely told them no thank you. I was fine. You'll be okay. We will all be okay if we just remember the reason we went through this surgery. Take care, Barbara Brewer, WLS 5/20/03 weight 278/50 8/1/03 Weight 237/00

I'm pre-op but I ahve to piggy back off of what the last person said. I love the Detour bars. It's like eating a candy bar and they have smaller versions of the big one at Walmart and CVS. Walmart is cheaper, I think I paid $1.22 for it. It's the size of a regular candy bar whereas the one I got from Vitamin Shoppe was humongous.

Try the Atkins Endulge Bars. They taste the closest to real chocolate bars that I've tasted. I like them much better than even the Detour Bars. No after taste.

While surfing the net last night I came across this product that is suppose to help with carb & sweet cravings. I have not tried this product, just passing on the information for you ...

http://www.lifeservices.com/ezStore123/DTProductList.asp?p=3_1_1_0_0_1_90 <BR
It is made by Keto. I just purchased the Keto pasta at the Vitamin Shoppe locally. It is a high protein, low carb pasta. Will try it this week. Hoping it is wonderful. Main ingredient in it is soy. Both my husband and myself are trying to cut down the carbs that we eat.

I am 6 mths postop and have tried to keep Blue Bunny sugar free fudgicles at home for when I'm interested in a sweet snack. They have only 35 calories and I think about 3 grms of carbs. I also will have a little watermelon or a handful of grapes occasionally.

I love Dannon Light 'n Fit yogurt, (when you get out further try adding 1 Tbls of grape-nuts or granola), Slices of apple dipped in peanut butter(crunchy and sweet), or drink a protein shake (mix a chocolate one with Sugar free tang, add ice mmmmm.... tastes like those chocolate orange things they sell around Christmas time. Use your imagination and experiment, now is the time to find healthy substitions for your cravings, you need to find what's right for you and what you can and can't have. Most important, listen to your body, believe me, it will tell you if you made a mistake. Good luck, and remember, don't deny yourself, just make different choices. You will eat like a normal person eventually, and you need to find out how to satisfy yourself with healthy choices before you get to that point in order to be a life long success. I thank God everyday for where I am now and pray for the strength to continue with the success.

Hershey's now makes sugar free chocolate candy, with and without almonds and they also have a sugar free peanut butter cup. Russell Stover's also has sugar free chocolate candies. They are located in the candy aisle (usually). I find them with other sugar free candies on the candy aisle at Wal-Mart. A few months ago, I had a "sweet" craving and this seemed to satify me. Good luck to you on your journey! Daphine (open RNY - down 75 pounds since 01/13/03)

Have you tried baking with Splenda? I had the same feeling with craving sweets.......so I went and got some Splenda and you can substitute it for sugar in just about any recipie.
I've made Banana Bread, Peanut Butter Cookies, etc......and the family can't tell the difference.

I agree with the other posters. However although I dearly love the taste of Splenda, do be advised that for "some of us" artifical sweetners, if over used, can start sugar cravings and eating binges even as a post op! Seems rare, but I'm one of them.

One of things I do occasionally when I want something sweet is I freeze 6 to 8 grapes. If you freeze them they taste just like candy, it brings out the natural sugars. Thats if you include fruit in your post wls diet. I know not everybody does but I have one serving of fresh fruit per day and its been wonderful thus far!

I was a sweet-a-holic before surgery and was amazed that my craving for something sweet didn't start until 6 months after surgery. As for sweets, they have to be sugar-free, no-added-sugar or made with alternatives such as Equal (uck!), Sweet-N-Low (Uck!), Splenda, fructose or turbinado sugar. For anyone interested in a recipe book that I developed uing Splnda, fructose or turbinado sugar....for AFTER you are healed, lost weight and need special recipes, see my profile page or visit the web page at www.freewebs.com/recipes-after-rny for photos, sample recipes and ordering information. Good luck!
