Question:
Is it possible to dump from something about 2 to 3 hrs after youve eaten it?
Today was my son's 6th birthday and I had a little sliver of marble cake (I know, big time no-no, but it was his birthday and I thought Id try just a little). It was mostly cake with just a little frosting on it. I was able to eat about 3/4 of that sliver and didnt seem to have any problems at first, but then about 2 or 3 hrs later my tummy hurt so bad. It lasted about 20 minutes or so and then went away. I thought dumping was something that pretty much affected you right away. Could there be such a thing as delayed dumping? — Kris T. Yes, I beleive it is. I once dumped on movie theater popcorn butter, 45
mins after the end of the movie. So something like 3 hours later. It hit me
while grocery shopping with my wife after the movie. I had to leave her
and go sit in the car with the air blowing on me. The WORST dumping I have
ever had though was on birthday cake, I would think it might act quicker.
It all depends on when it hits the digestive juices and then hits your
system, I guess. But I think it is possible.

My boyfriend took me out dinner one night and I ordered something like I
had not even had the surgery yet. It was nachos which was a bad choice for
sure. At least I only had 5 chips and I was stuffed. Anyway I was totally
fine the entire night, the next morning however it was a totally different
story. I had the worst cramps and other intestinal distress that I wanted
to die. I just could not believe how horrible I felt but it thank God only
last for 20 minutes approx. and then subsided. I am a firm believer in
delayed dumping. At the beginning of my post-op my mother bought me
fat-free pudding and after 2 teaspoons I fell asleep for about and hour it
was wild because of the sugar!! Just keep an eye on what you are eating and
how you react, you will never know what affects you if you dont try it
once. Good luck and take care.

My experience with dumping is that it is always very quick-- almost
immediate-- as the white carbs can't be processed in your pouch, get
"dumped" immediately into your intestine where the receptors then
send out the signal to over-produce insulin. However, that being said,
there are lots of other cramps, stomach aches and intestinal woes that can
happen without dumping. The result, however, should be the same: learn
what foods cause you to dump, or upset your stomach, or cause cramping and
then avoid them. Of course, if I had been able to read those body signs
before I had my RNY, I suspect that I would have known when I was full,
wouldn't have overeaten with such gusto and would probably not have weighed
over 500 pounds.
Good luck.

I think it can happen. I know when I have sugar (I keep it under 10g) it
hits me like a ton of bricks but the other weekend my BF made me breakfast.
I had eggs with cheese, a piece of bacon, then lastly one or two bites of
wheat toast with jelly. I thought it was no sugar added but I guess not.
Anyhoo, about an hour or so later I thought I was gonna die. Maybe because
it was eaten last and took longer to hit my system? Dont know but I do
think it can take longer to hit ya sometimes. ~Sindey~ Open RNY 10-23-02
