Question:
Ok....I think i've really gone loopy now.
I'm 5-weeks post op, and have had trouble eating lately. Soft/liquids go down just fine. Anything else, I'm having problems with. I'm so very hungry due to the fact that liquids and such just aren't satisfying me at this stage. Tonight I have done something very gross, and may be a little disturbing to others. But I need to know if *anyone* has done this too. I actually ate a piece of pizza....BUT....After every bite that I chewed, I spit out. I did the same with an apple. I actually enjoyed it too. I really felt like I was eating *normally*. Got the taste, the chewing of REAL food...and I felt satisfied. This sounds strange, I know. Has anyone else done this? Or have I gone loopy? :) — Kim L. NO you are not loopy. I have done this AND still do on occasion. When my
stomach is upset and just wont accept any food I do that. Also when I just
have the urge to eat from bordom I will eat something and spit it out. I
am not proud of it but it works for me. Like when I have the craving for
chocolate(that time of the month) I will do that with a chocolate bar. I
still have the problem of head hunger. But you have to be carefull and
make sure that you only do that once in a while. Because you need to eat.
Spitting out food can turn in to something similar to anorexia.

No if you look in the library under spitting food or something like that,
you will see it is a common thing among many post-ops. I myself have done
the same thing with sugar free candy, and other foods. I am 2months post-op
and if I eat pizza I usually go with a veggie mediterranean pizza,
spinach, broc, tomatoes, mozzarella, and feta cheese-I have eaten s lice of
that before, but I usually just pull the cheese off on one and half slices
and eat that. I am having problems now with not having an appetite at all,
and protein shakes seem to be making have bouts of constipation so I am on
this Mcdonalds' 4pc nugget kick-seems to be the only thing that I can
tolerate right now. Best of luck to you with everything-open RNY

Hi, Kim...I had the same hungry problem at 5 weeks and intolerance to
anything "firm." I'm 8 weeks postop and I still can't eat ANY
meat, except ham (weird). You have to find something more substantial than
liquidy stuff to fill you. What definitely worked for me and continues to
work for me is chili, homemade soups with lots and lots of stuff in it and
then just eating the stuff out of the soup, heat up the broth 1/2 hour
later and drink it b/c it'll still be loaded with vitamins and minerals,
another item that still satisfies me is a tablespoon or 2 of pb by
itself...just kinda lick it off the spoon. I thought I was ready for meat
tonight and made a lambchop...HUGE mistake, I knew I was full and chewed
more and spit several times, then puked it all up later. I just can't
tolerate the meat...have you tried soft fish (like flounder, tilipia,
etc.), shrimp or crab? I tolerate all of those very very well, also...good
luck..stay in touch. lap rny 3/18/03 -40

Hi Kim, I'm on my 6th week, and I can't hardly eat anything, I surely cant
eat meat. I try 1 bite and i start feeling that strange feeling in my
pouch,2 bites and its alittle worse, 3 and i'm sick, an hour or more of
spitting up liquid and such. Till finally it gets better. My doctor says to
keep trying, that it may take me till the 6 months mark to be able to eat
meat. He says some are just more sensitive that way.
I also have chewed up and spit it out.. I bet its pretty common. Hope this
helped.

I did it early on too. I did that with Christmas dinner when I was 2 weeks
post op. I've also done it with pizza, cookies, and other things I knew I
wasn't supposed to eat. It satisfied the craving. I don't do it anymore,
because I tolerate just about everything. Don't worry about it, it's pretty
common. :)
