Question:
9 Weeks Post Op- Too Soon for Popcorn?
I just love popcorn. My husband and I go to the show every weekend, and pre-op, I would eat alot of it. I always ate it without any butter or salt. I really miss it, but don't know if I should get started on it again. I am 9 weeks post-op. Does anyone else eat popcorn at 9 weeks post-op? Thanks! — JoAnn A. (posted on May 13, 2003)

Hi...I'm 8 weeks post op and had some popcorn last week. I only had about
a handful but it was fine. The secret is the chew chew chew.

BE CAREFUL...My surgeons protocol does not allow us to ever have popcorn
again!! The reason is because the hulls can get caught in your stoma and
can become stuck causing a stricture. You are a new post op anyway so you
should really be focusing on that protien not carbs. Try to wait until you
are at least 6 months out before you make it habit to eat popcorn. Things
really seem to calm down around that time and you probably wouldnt have any
problems trying it then. As for the movies I bring a water and a protein
bar with me and that is my treat. Good luck. Wendi Open RNY 9/19/02 down

I was able to eat Kettle popcorn about 2 months. I haven't had any
problems. However I don't eat popcorn very often since they are empty
carbs. A better snack are the Quaker Quakes rice snacks (little
mini-ricecakes). They go down easy, don't swell like normal rice, and
don't have any sharp edges at all.

My surgeon is violently against us eating popcorn at all. He says it can
cause problems with the pouch and is full of calories with no nutritional
benefit. I'm 17 months post-op and have had it about three times but very
little. By the way, you can eat a lot of popcorn and never feel it in the
pouch.

Hi! Thanks for asking that question...I just ate some tonight for the
first time...everyone's right, you can really eat alot of it and not feel
satisfied. It was scary. I'll not be eating that again any time soon.
Look for another posting today under crunchy snacks for better ideas. Good
luck...8 weeks po -40

Hi, John! :) Oh, I agree with the posters who claim popcorn cold be
'dangerous'. A total 'red light' food for me. Waaaay to easy to eat lots
of and full of useless calories (NOT that I am counting calories here!!).
I have tried a very small amount twice. It tasted good, but after I was
finished really chewing good, I had all this CRAP in my mouth. The hulls
and stuff. YUK! I agree with John. The rice cakes are delightful. Be
careful. You can put away a lot of them. Generally, I try to stay away
from the things that I can put away a lot of. RED LIGHT! I am seldom
hungry between meals. Thank goodness! Open RNY 10/30/02 down 146.

I've had zero problems with popcorn and have eaten it pretty regularly
since about a couple weeks out (once I was allowed regular foods). I don't
chose the light kind - love that theater butter flavored micro popcorn
:>) I find it keeps me regular. Is 9 weeks too soon? What's your doc
say about it?

I went through a popcorn phase at about 8 weeks. I was eating a lot of it
(I thought). A cup or so at least once a day for a couple of weeks. Then
the phase passed and I haven't had any since. I chewed and chewed and no
problem with it.

I was cleared to eat popcorn at 5 weeks post-op and probably eat a few cups
of popcorn most nights as a snack. Its a low calorie/fat snack (if you
don't load up with the butter), and has the added benefit of fiber, which
in my case helps to keep me regular, if ya know what I mean! My
nutitionist also approved popcorn post-op.
