Question:
Head of our group on yahoo posted this about crystal pro!
As promised, I've done my homework in hopes I can help answer your questions about Crystal Pro... a pixie stick type of protein. I always advise calling the company and asking to speak to someone who understands the chemical breakdown of ANY protein. With Crystal Pro, they advertise it as ... "loaded with branched chain amino acids [BCAAs] like valine, leucine and isoleucine, as well as a full and complete spectrum of Essential, Nonessential and Conditionally Essential Amino Acids) can immediately begin going to work to help rebuild and grow lean muscle tissue, and up-regulate your metabolism. Instant oral absorption less amino acid catabolism (waste) because less protein passes through your gut and digestive tract. You get immediate amino acid availability and the best-tasting protein product ever developed.">> Sounds great huh? Makes you want to buy their product because it tastes like candy and is so EASY!! :) Don't be so sure! I spoke to the company's nutritionist and explained that we are gastric bypass patients and asked if she was familiar with the surgery. She was... sort of. I still explained that we have virtually no acids (needed for breakdown of food) available to us except at the end of the illeum. I asked her if Crystal Pro was pre-digested. She said no... it was intact protein. She said it would not do us any good. So, whenever you find a new protein that sounds too good to be check it out! You sure don't want to rely on a product that can't help you and could potentially cause malnutrition. This was written by a yahoo moderator at wls of wny. — Darlene C. (posted on February 27, 2003)

i AM SCEPTICAL. tHE MEAT, FISH, CHICKEN,EGGS, ETC I EAT ARE NOT PREDIGESTED
PROTEIN EITHER. ARE YOU SAYING THAT WE DON'T ABSORB ANY PROTEIN THAT IS NOT
PREDIGESTED?

I kind of wonder about what Willow said, too. I know predigested proteins
are more bioavailable (meaning we absorb MORE of them than some other
proteins), and I know we absorb more from whey protein than we do from soy
-- but we do absorb some from soy as well. I think egg protein and animal
protein fall somewhere in between. Isn't it a question of degree? Would
it be more correct to say, you can use this product, but it won't benefit
you, gram-for-gram, quite as much as predigested protein (as opposed to
saying that it "would not do us [gastric bypass patients] any
good"?

I am planning on buying some and taking it to my nutrisionist/dietian. and
seeing what she has to say about it. Just because someone is the head of a
yahoo group doesn't make them right. But some of the things said could be.
Your best bet is to ask your dietian and see what they have to say about it
for you. Everyone is different. I'll post an update as soon as I get word
from my dietian.
