Question:
heating up protien denatures it?

I know I have read on one of the internet support sites that heating up protien supplements denatures the protien and it breaks down. Such as adding it to hot drinks or using it to bake and cook with. Could someone verify this?    — Jenny_B (posted on December 17, 2002)

hello! i hear this all the time (lol)...it depends on which protein you are using. whey protein cannot be cooked with and most soy proteins either -- however there are a few brands of soy protein that are made specifically so that you can cook or freeze them... Nature's Best is one brand, Trader Joe's makes one and the one i use is Jarrow's Iso Rich Soy Protein. You have to make sure the protein is not "protein shake" and says right on the label that it can be heated and/or frozen. i order the jarrows online at www.vitamintrader.com and i use it in almost everything. i have a bunch of recipes on my website: http://www.geocities.com/katebme2002 btw...i'm 18 mos post op, been using the jarrows since 4 mos post op and all my lab levels are perfect. good luck! kate open rny 6-14-01 pre op: 268lbs goal: 135lbs current: 126lbs
