Question:
Does anyone have experience with United Healthcare EPO covering tummy tuck, etc?

I will be covered by United Healthcare beginning January 1. I don't expect to be checking into a tummy tuck until summertime, however. I am just doing some research into the insurance issue and into finding a plastic surgeon. Also, if you have United, did they pay for more than a tummy tuck? I am actually interested in a body lift and "bat-wing" removal. Thanks for your feedback! - Anna LAP RNY 7/3/02 -96lbs.    — Anna L. (posted on December 16, 2002)

UHC does not cover cosmetic surgery, period. If there is a medical necessity, they will cover reconstructive surgery. A couple of years ago, they changed they way they handled 'approvals'. UHC no longer makes the medical necessity decision, they leave that up to your doctor. As long as it is covered by your plan. Before I get flamed for what I just said, please read my last sentence again. If your doctor feels that you need a tummy tuck, and it is covered by your plan (most plans do), you will have one. Most times only a pani is covered, because that is where the problem is. However, I see it very difficult to consider a body lift and bat wing removal as medically necessary.
