Question:
Will I ever be able to eat these again?

I am very aware that biscuits and bread were the two main problems for me pre-op. I could care less about sweets- I crave those carbs! I am now shy of 4 weeks post-op and am curious if I will ever be able to eat small amounts of a biscuit, a dinner roll or bread. I understand that the doughieness of it can cause it to sit in our pouch like a rock and cause alot of pain. Will it always be this way or it just while we are healing? I've been good- I've only taken a nibble from a HARD biscuit once. I can't see myself eating bread more than twice a week later down the road, so its not that I feel I will revert to my old habits. I would just like to know that I COULD eat half of a biscuit some day....If you are able to eat breads now, how long before you were able to without problems? Thanks for any responses!    — karmiausnic (posted on October 16, 2002)

Yes, you will be able to eat bread again, but....you probably won't want to! I find that it fills up my pouch to fast and it's true that it does just sit there and make you feel full, although it doesn't hurt. Try to wait until you are at least 8 weeks out, my Dr. let me have anything that I wanted at that point. I am six months out and down 100 lbs. with no complications!

Yes, you will. You will probably be able to eat or taste EVERYTHING again; just realize that this is just your learning period to get used to different/better foods. Use it to your advantage- the rolls/breads will come back (smaller of course) so please do not feel that this is forever- you just need different foods right now.

I am almost 8 months out and I have been able to have carbs since the liquid stage (6 weeks) and have had no problems. I do make sure I eat protein first but I do eat some carbs. I love bread, potatoes, etc. The other night I cooked chicken strips for our supper - I ate 1 small strip, couple of bites of green peas and 1/4 to 1/2 of a small biscuit. Just remember to keep the amount down and you should do fine. Good Luck!!

When you are able to eat bread or biscuits, be careful. Chew, chew, chew and take your time to assess your body's reaction. I'm 3-1/2 months post-op and I never have more then a bite or 2 of bread or rolls...and they are small bites. I've found that I can get that protein in a lot easier if I just skip the bread. Crackers are another story, I like to have maybe 2 or 3 with my tuna or chicken salad. And now that I'm working again, exercising, finding I am a bit hungrier, I save crackers for snack time. I really like the multigrain Wheat Thins (help with fiber). The one thing I really didn't quite believe as a pre-op doing my research, was that your tastes DO change. Who would have thought I could live this long without all the old favorites (Pepsi, coffee, ice cream, chocolate, fried taters)? Not only am I living but I feel like I have come back to life! Now I drink only water and herbal tea, the occasional Blue Bunny No Sugar Added Ice Cream...and maybe a bite or 2 of a tater if I feel I must. You'll be fine, just listen to your body, to that new tummy, and you'll do great! Good Luck, Anna LAP RNY 7/3/02 -76lbs.

I can basically eat anything that I feel like at this point but quite honestly, I don't really like the way bread feels after I eat it. It doesn't hurt but it just feels uncomfortable. Interestingly, I can eat pizza with no problem even though it is almost all bread. I also notice that I have to chew bread up so much that by the time I swallow it, I don't care for the taste or texture of it. I'm about 6 months out. Keep up the great work! - Mike

I am 4 months out and I endulge in carbs from time to time. I was the same as you....ok with the sweets, but wanted those breads! I can eat a small amount of pizza or a grilled cheese with no problem. As long as I don't rush, it's fine. I don't go overboard, but I think its bad anyway to completely shun one things like carbs from your diet. The key is balance. Don't worry!

I never had much of a problem with bread or rolls, but let me tell you I cannot eat my dad's biscuits anymore! I dump on them! And he doesn't put sugar in them either. I have finally been able to eat a half of one, but I am still really careful. I can eat half a "chicken place" biscuit just fine. Unfortunately, I like my dad's better. Well, then I guess it is probably for the best, huh?

well, the short answer to your question is "maybe". Later down the road some perople can tolerate these things, and some people can not. I am 10 months out and still can not tolerate "doughy" breads. What I can eat are tortillias if I take small bites,Pita bread (toasted, and toasted sliced bread. As well as crackers. I'm kinda glad I can not eat the "good" breads, cause I would eat them all the time. By the way...the reason I can not eat them is becasue they still get stuck. GOod Luck to you!!

I am 5 months post-op and can only tolerate breads some of the time. I cannot eat tortillas at all. Those go down like a rock. Because bread don't seem to agree with me, I don't eat it often at all. But once in a while I am able to eat a few bites.

Everyone is different, Karen, as evidenced by the myriad of answers you have received. I started at about 4 weeks with tortillas and that sat OK. Then I moved to thin toasted wheat breads with crust removed. Now I eat my 1/2 sandwich on any kind of multigrain bread, but still remove the crust! But I can't handle pizza, just a few bites and it does feel like a rock in the pouch-uncomfortable. In a few weeks, try it out-just take a few nibbles though to see how you tolerate it.

At almost 4 months post-op I can eat anything. I use 1 piece of bread for a sandwich now, I ate a biscuit once and couldn't eat anything else, I was stuffed. I guess I learned my lesson the hard way that time. It's funny, I find myself getting mad at bread and rolls and stuff because it takes up too much space! These days I mostly avoid bread. Good luck & enjoy!

At 6 months post-op, I still can't eat any bread that's too soft or chewy. I can eat a little bit of toast or breadsticks, that kind of thing. Regular bread or biscuits ect...just feel too gummy in my mouth and don't sit well on my pouch. The thing is...I really don't crave them or miss them anymore. ( Pre-op I LOVED carbs.) Your tastes and cravings will change post - op. Good luck to you!

I am 10 months post-op and I DO NOT EAT bread of any kind. I have had a bite of a toasted english muffin once and my surgeon made me eat a piece of toast in the hospital after I had been admitted once with a problem not related to my RNY. Other than that I have stayed clear of breads. They are full of carbs and are virtually nutrition free for us. If you know you have a carb problem, I wouldn't tempt it. I know that if I start eating crackers, which I have done from time to time, I have to be really very careful because I tend to overdo it. One just leads to another. Of course it will be up to you to decide if you want to chance it. I may even decide to eat a half sandwich someday after I've reached goal and have stablaized. But while I'm still losing, no way.
