Question:
Has anyone experienced an extreme change in taste-?

Maybe before surgery you would never eat vegetables, and now crave them? Before surgery only wanted carbs, and now you only crave sweets? Just wondering if I have hope for craving veggies..instead of the junk.    — Kay S. (posted on May 30, 2002)

Yes yes yes! I felt weird about it at first but now I guess it could help in the long run. I used to live for sweets! Now can walk right passed em'. I crave hot and spicy foods now....hot wings, taco salad, nachos with peppers, things like that. I have'nt eaten any of these as I am only 5wks out from open rny, but will give them a whirl as soon as I think they are safe. Sweets just taste nasty now, I mean just way too sweet. Also, while I am here, smells. Some foods are unappealing now due to the smell. Chicken, milk, just to name a few. Hope this answers your question.

my tastes have changed since surgery on 4/9/02. i used to eat cheesburgers all the time. lived on them. now i dont like them anymore. i also no longer like pizza and cannot eat any eggs (boiled, scrambled, or even egg salad). i'm hoping that maybe i will start to like veggies. never liked them before surgery. keeping my fingers crossed.

This seems to be something that RNY patients experience alot, but I have never heard a really clear "clinical" reason. I was always a high-fat "junkie", and fresh fruits and vegetables would never have been my first choices. Post-op, high-fat foods were a real turn-off, and I couldn't get enough salads and fresh fruit. I am now 27 months post-op, and that hasn't changed. Sweets have also not been a problem for me.....even juice tastes too sweet now. We all seem to respond to the surgery in slightly different ways, and have different tolerances to different foods. I still can't tolerate eggs at all, although the other members of my family who have had RNY have no problems with them. Two of my family don't do well with red meat, but that is one of my favorites. You'll find what works for you :-) Good luck!
