Question:
I need some suggestions for breakfast protein
I'm 9 weeks post-op and down 52lbs but I'm really sick of scrambled eggbeaters and yogert. Any ideas out there? — Alison N. (posted on May 14, 2002)

I have a protein bar for breakfast everyday. The one's I like best are
Pure Protein by WorldWide Sport Nutrition. My favorite flavor is S'Mores
but there are lots of other good ones. The one I eat has 19g of protein,
3gs sugar and very few carbs. Must be working because I have lost over 100
pounds in 5 months.

How about either a protein shake or some FF cottage cheese with fresh
berries or 1/2 banana?

I always take a few wheat crackers and 2 ounces of cheese to work (I eat
breakfast there). Thats 15 grams of protein, then I get a 12 oz steamed
skim milk with either fat/sf chocolate syrup or espresso in it. Thats
another 10 grams of protein. I also sometimes take a few teaspoons of
peanut butter. (I get the publix brand which they make there and has no
sugar or oil added) This works well for me as I have trouble eating very
much in the morning. With the milk I feel that at least I am getting SOME
nutrition. I cant do protein drinks, so thats my alternative. When I make
the skim milk drinks at home, I add 1/4 cup dry milk to it for extra
protein, it tastes much richer too! I dont do meat either so I mostly get
my protein thru skim milk, cheese and beans. I am almost 4 months post op
and down 90 pounds, and I feel great! Good luck! Donna

Try a breakfast burrito. Take a scrambled egg, melt some cheese over it(I
like provolone), smear some refried beans on the tortilla (its actually a
taco size tortilla), add the egg/cheese, add a tablespoon or two of chili.
Its my favorite, and I usually eat 1/2 of it. I take it to work too and
heat it in the microwave. A little bit of carbs and loads of protein...

I had the same problem. I lost the taste for eggs about a week out from
surgery, so you're doing better than I! (My doc has us eating soft solids
on day 3).
This won't have quite as much protein as your eggs, but I totally lost the
taste for eggs and started improvising for breakfast. I found these things
in my grocer's freezer called "cheese blintzes" (Golden brand).
Essentially, they are crepes (high egg content) stuffed with cottage cheese
filling. Again, I am only 1 month out, so I eat a half a blintz in the a.m.
along with some berries, and about a tablespoon of lowfat cottage cheese on
the side to up the protein a bit.
It needs to be sweetened a bit in order to be tasty, so here's what I do:
As the blintz is cooking on the stove in Pam, I take about an ounce of
frozen mixed berries, put them in a little bowl along with some Splenda (a
little less than a teaspoon), a dash of sugar free syrup, a couple drops
vanilla. I pop it in the microwave for 30 seconds, stir. If I have a couple
of fresh blueberries, I'll add them in, pop it back in the microwave for
another 30 seconds and stir again. There will be a lot of juice in the bowl
when it is done in the microwave. When the blintz is finished cooking, I
sprinkle it with cinnamon and pour the fruit and juice over it. YUM!
For variety, and if I know it's going to be one of those days where I might
not get in all the protein I'd like, I'll throw some slivered almonds in
the pan first and toast them a bit, set them aside, and then sprinkle the
finished crepe with them.
There are usually enough berries left over to eat with my cottage cheese,
too.
For those of you that are curious, here are some of the nutritional stats
for the blintzes (for a whole blintz):
Calories: 80
Fat: 2g
Carbs: 13g
Protein: 6g
They are also all natural, with no preservatives. Or you could probably
easily make your own! But I like the convenience of having them in the
freezer, ready to go.
Hope this helps!

Here is an old recipe from my dieting or Weight Watcher days. I take one
small apple, core, peel half way down.
In the center of the apple I sprinkle about 1 tsp. of water, artificial
sweetener, sprinkle cinnamon, and nutmeg and microwave for 7-9 minutes
under plastic wrap. After apple is baked, I place it on top of about 3 oz
of ricotta cheese. The combination of ricotta and baked apple is
delicious.
