Question:
Soy Vs. Whey protein powder..........is one better than the other post-op?
I have found a protein drink I really like. It's made by Revival (chocolate daydream). It's a doctor formulated soy protein with 130 cal, 2.5 g fat, 7g carbs, and 20g protein, among other good things like calcium, potassium, iron, etc. Its made with aspartame. My question is, does it matter which I use...soy or whey? Is one better for me post-op? Thanks...... — blank first name B. (posted on March 21, 2002)

It really all depends I think how you react to it postop. I have not had
surgery, but have researched a lot on here about the protein shakes. So
long as it has no regular sugar, I think you have a better chance of
keeping it down. however, there are some very good whey protein powders
that taste ok too. I like optimum whey from GNC. Good luck to you.

The best one for YOU is the one you'll take willingly. BUt you asked
technically. Whey is #1 in bioavailability. Soy is further down the list,
like maybe #9 or so. Whey is the one that helps with sugar & binge
type cravings.

For me the only difference between Soy and Whey protein is taste and cost.
Soy is cheaper and easier to find but it tatsed as if I was drinking
chocolate flavored sand! Whey Protein tastes a lot better and goes down a
lot easier!

Whey protein mixes more smoothly in water than soy protein I think. I
prefer the taste of whey as well, but I agree with Michelle, whichever one
tat you will use the most consistently. I knew it was better overall than
soy, but not by how much (the figures quoted in Michelle's response)Good
Luck!
