I think you would be okay but it would depend on if you have labs or just
sit down classes. Also remember that you will be very tired and may have a
hard time getting all the assignments done.

Good thing you will be LAP. I doubt you would feel up to it if you had an
Open. To bad you could'nt shedule WLS during the summer or at least a
couple weeks winter or spring break from College.

I took a quarter off because my surgery was going to be right at the
begining of the quarter and I had open. Make sure your professors know you
are having surgery...you don't have to say what type so they will hopefully
work with you if you need to get extensions on assignments.

I am also a college student and have decided to postpone surgery until
christmas break. That way i will have more time to recover at home....and
to get used to post-op problems, etc (dumping,pain,...)I am in nursing
school & my program doesnt permit me skipping any semesters. I think
that i have wanted to be a nurse and I want the surgery almost equally but
in my case, i decided that 3 months is no big deal (I'd rather do both
things..school & surgery...so I dont want to jeopardize myself with
either)

I went back to school 2 weeks post-op. I was very very tired and missed
some classes/left early the first six weeks. If you MUST miss school and
it's at the beginning of the semester, it should be okay but I wouldn't do
it at the end or in the middle when it's crunch time. Low energy was
definitely a problem for me for the first six weeks

I had my LAP RNY last year at the beginning of the fall semester. I missed
3 weeks. The others are right...you are really tired the first month and a
half or so. It's not the classes that are difficult, but the soreness and
walking around campus. Good luck with your surgery!

I am 3 wks post-op from lap rny...I took 4 weeks off of work because I
could. THAT SAID, If I HAD to, I could have gone to work (desk job) at 2
weeks. Like the others, I was extremely tired and there was still some
"discomfort", (NOT pain) in my lower left tummy...normal but
still felt it. My attention span wasn't the best - one does not realize
how long anesthesia stays inside your system, long after you wake up. Good
luck to you :)

Hi, I asked my surgeon's office this same question. They said I should
feel up to sitting thru class a week after lap-rny. Good luck to you!

I had my lap RNY surgery on June 24, 2003. I was in the middle of a summer
semester. I missed one week of classes and went back the following week. I
talked to my dr. about it and he said that I could go back the following
week, but to make sure thatwhen I went back to get up and walk every hour
and kept water with me, drinking constantly. I am glad that I took the
extra week off. It wasn't that I was sore or hurting, but the fact that I
tired very easily. I talked to my professors and told them what was going
on and when I was having it done. They were supportive and sent me my
missed work online or they would give it to some friends of mine and they
would get me the work. So, I did my work at home for the week that I
missed and successfully completed the semester with a 3.5 GPA. Good luck
in your surgery.

It just depends on how u feel. I was 19 when I had the surgery on Januarary
21,2002 and was scheduled for classes but elected to withdraw afterwards.
Carrying the books, walking around up/down stairs would have been way too
hectic for me. I had the open rny. So I guess it just boils down to how you
feel afterwards. Dont forget that you'll have frequent doctors appointments
afterwards, and depending on your stay you might have that nasty little
drain still attached too.

Hi there,
I had surgery on Sept 26, 2002 and was back to school by by Oct 3, 2002
which was exactly one week after surgery. I was a little tired but thats
about it. I was also kind of happy to have my work to focus on because
early on as a post op you have so much adjusting to do. It was great to
have other things to think about besides, what can I eat and junk like
that. I bet you would do fine. I was 32 when I had surgery.

Sarah,
Hi, I was in the same boat. I start school on Monday August 25, my surgery
is Sept 3, I would have been in alot of trouble. I went to my advisor, and
we fixed the problem quick. I changed all my classes to Internet classes!!
That gave me the flexability to go at my own pace and work if I feel like
it. I can also dress comfy at home, I feel the homework will keep my busy
enough to keep my mind off of "stuff"!!
HOpe that helps!

I had open and went to my law school classes 2 weeks after surgery. I was
pretty tired and not back to work yet. It's not hard to go and sit, but it
may be hard to actually comprehend what's going on!
