Question:
Has anyone had several blood clots go to lungs and still opted to have surgery?
I already have a green field filter installed but this last one started above it. If so , how did your surgeon go about to take care you so you didn't develope one. — Carol H. (posted on April 5, 2003)

My mother in law had a pulmanary embolism (SP?) a year ago and she is now 2
weeks post op RNY and doing great. The doctors told her they would not do
the surgery on her unless she had a filter put in her leg, so the day
before she had RNY she had the filter put in, it was a simple painless
procedure and she will have it in for life. Hope this helps a little if you
have any ???? feel free to E-Mail me my address has changed and I have not
updated yet it is [email protected] Take care.

I had been hospitalized for bi-lateral pulmonary emboli (multiple blood
clots in both lungs) in January 2002. I was in the hospital for a week on
heparin therapy and they discharged me on Coumadin. My surgeon had
discussed putting in a Greenfield filter but then decided not to (which led
to a little confusion on the day of surgery because he had not told me of
his decision before then). I stopped my Coumadin 5 days prior to surgery
(7/17/02) on the orders of my PCP. I received heparin shots while I was
in the hospital and then resumed my Coumadin once I was out of the
hospital. The quicker you are active and the more you are active after
surgery, the less the likelihood that clots will form...JR (open RNY
