Question:
New Postie is very concerned, please help.
Hello, I'm 8 days post-op from open VBG. I am still on the liquid diet until friday when I see my surgeon. I feel really good and feel satisfied after I eat the amount I'm supposed to (not really full but I never really feel hungry anyways) Well when I drink between meals I feel like I can drink ALOT! My diet says 1-2 oz every 15 min. I can drink like 8 oz in a few minutes. I called my Dr's office and they seemed concerned that I might already have streched my pouch and I am supposed to call to speak with my Dr. tomorrow. I'm worried so I thought I'd ask you guys your opinions. Thanks for any response. — LaKeAffy (posted on June 18, 2002)

I didn't have the VGB, but had RNY. I too, was concerned that I was
drinking too much too fast. I have been told that it is very difficult to
stretch your pouch with water. Reason being, the water passes right
through. I was so afraid I had strected my pouch, but I realize when I eat
solid food I can still only eat 1-2 ozs at a time without being miserable.
So I know it's still intact. Hope this helped.

I do not see how you could have possibly stretched your pouch 8 days from
surgery and on only a liquid diet. From my own experience, water flows
thru your pouch like, well water. I have always been able to drink the
same amount post op as i could pre op. And once you start on solids, you
will realize that the amount you are eating now will be far greater than
what you can eat on solids. Think of it this way. How quickly does water
flow through a straw? And how quickly does pudding flow through the same
straw?
