Question:
Can you drink at all post op?
I go to alot of business dinners. What will happen if I have a drink post-op? — [Anonymous] (posted on February 11, 2002)

I would listen to what everyone says about waiting to drink, imagine
pouring alcohol on an open wound! However, when you do, drink slow!!!
Before surgery I could put away a 12 pack no problem. Now, I have 1 glass
of wine and I start acting silly! I don't know if a business dinner is the
place I would try drinking for the first time also. Sometimes that wine
and such goes down really smooth and the next thing you know, you're
toasted! Most people say have 1 drink and a glass of water and then
another drink. It slows you down and keeps you hydrated! Look on the
bright side, you'll be a cheap date!! :) Hang in there!

I can't help you with personal experience. However, I do know that this is
asked a lot on here and so I did some research for you in the library. I
went to the library and typed in "alcohol" into the search. I got
a page with a lot of information. Here it is

Maybe you could find even more answers there. Hope this helps. Shelley

I am almost 5 months post-op and I drink wine on Fridays with the girls.
My doc said it was okay even before 2 months post-op. He did say to take
it easy. I go out on Fridays and have up to 5-6 glasses over the course of
the night. I know many others may pass bad judgements on me becuase of the
calories, etc....but, life is life and while I've changed a BIG part of it,
I enjoy a few glasses of wine every now and then. Talk to your doctor.

My doctors office gave us a post-op guide book. It says that alcohol
should be completely avoided for one year. Due to the surgery there are
absorbsion issues and any alcohol consumption prior to one year could cause
irreversible liver or kidney damage. (can't remember which one exactly) I
live in NY City and partied hard on the weekends (5-6 martinis were
nothing!) I probably will be too scared to start up again after my one year
annivesary. I don't want to mess with progress.

Okay, here's my story on alcohol.......I am a social drinker, and my
Surgeon told me at my 6 week visit I could start experimenting. He told me
to stick with dry wines, and low sugar drinks. My choices have been
various wines, absolute vodka with diluted cranberry juice (get strage
looks when ordering that) or absolute with lime juice. I have also tried a
couple bloody mary's. The alcohol does have an effect on me faster than
before, however, it also goes away really fast. I always try to drink
plenty of liquids the day before and after I drink. Cheers!
