Question:
Since some people dump after eating high fat food,Dont we absorb fat ?
I read where RNYs cant absorb fat soluble vitamins does mean we dont absorb fat? — Connie Z. (posted on December 28, 2001)

My understanding of dumping isn't in the absorobing, but the introduction
of the offending food. Dumping being very different than diarrhea, it takes
place when the offending substance passes thru the pouch & hits that
intestine, totally undigested, totally unbroken down for absorption and in
essence, "raw". Intestines were designed to absorb &
transport, not to take the fresh food & break it down FIRST (digest)
and then try to absorb it, WHILE trying to transport. We're putting a huge
load at once on that entry into the intenstinal system. It's the lack of
digestion (breaking down chemically) that causes the malabsorption.
Although the food has a chance to "mingle" with the digestive
juices for a longer "trip" down the common channel of a proximal
RNY than it does with distal RNY, the food still never falls into a
"vat of acid" again, so never will be fully digested and
processed through the duodenum in the usual way. The physiology book lists
8 nutritional elements, protein, iron, calcium, A, D, E, zinc & B12
PLUS some fats/oils AND complex carbs as being not digested without that
old stomach/duodenum visit. It's a mixed blessing for sure. I've never
dumped on fats, but most definitely on sugar and still do, long post-op.
Some dump on ONE Dorito!

huh , thanks for that explanation. I didn't understand that. Question - if
the vitamins don't absord the usually way [with juices] how do we get
vitamins and or do we have to take double ... triple, the amount than
normal?

True dumping is caused when sugars hit the intestines and cause the
pancreas to produce a large amount of insulin. That is why people get the
shakes, sweats, runs, tired.... This is because our body can not process
these sugars before they hit the small intestines after gastric bypass
surgery.
Now FAT will cause loose bowels, the runs, and this is because fat once
ingested becomes a liquid and literally flows right through our system
pushing out all that we have ingested. This has been happening to me since
I had my gall bladder removed 6 years ago. I am 4 weeks post op on Monday
3/3/03 and have not had either of the above happen.
Best of luck.
Jamie :)
