Question:
Can iced tea take the place of all or part of the 64 oz.

I really don't mind drinking water, but it does get boreing after awhile. I am trying to find out what other drinks can take the place of some or all of the water. Seems to me tea is just water with some flavor. I am post-op and am trying to get used to drinking that much, it's not easy now, gosh what will it be like after surgery with such a tiny tummy! Thanks.....Nancy    — Nancy S. (posted on October 28, 2001)

I get jars of Lipton Diet Peach Tea (around $4). There are no carbohydrates (or maybe one) per serving. Is is pretty good as I get tired of plain water too.

Hi - I'm pre-op and I drink Lipton's decaffinated sugarless tea sweetened with Sweet'n Low and mixed with Crystal Lite's Pineapple-Orange. You might like it, too. Nina in Maine

If it's caffeine, it counts AGAINST your water total. You actually have to subtract it. If it's decaf, it's not "anti-water", but it can still cause problems for us, since we tend to be prone to kidney stones. The first thing my urologist did was forbid iced tea of any kind. The reasoning was the tanic acid in it. Well, since the kidney stone hurt Big Time, I save iced tea for a very rare treat. I stick with Crystal Light or sugar free Tang, stuff like that.

Nancy, I asked my nutritionist about the cold brew tea. She said that is was fairly low in caffeine and that it could count as part of my water intake. But, not to just drink that. I usually put a cold brew tea and 2 sweet and low's in my pockte when I go out. That way I can change my water to tea if I choose to. You will probably get alot of conflicting answers to this question, so the best thing to do I guess is to check with your doctor. Good Luck...

I was told that herbal teas and decaf tea counts as a water. But reugular tea...like coffee with caffein counts as half. That is if you drink an 8oz. glass if iced tea that has caffeine...it could count as 40z. if water.

NO! Iced tea contains caffeine. Therefore, for every 12 oz of it that you drink, you SUBTRACT 14 oz from your body! Decaf ice tea, on the other hand, counts 1:1 towards your water requirement for the day. It's worth it to watch caffeine very carefully or to eliminate it entirely from your post-op diet for this reason. I have such a hard time staying hydrated that I can't IMAGINE deliberately drinking anything that takes away from my water quota each day! Good luck.

Hi--I found that after my surgery everything tasted really sweet. You might try unsweetened Cool Aid, that way you can control the sweetness and it counts towards your water!! Good Luck to you!!
