Question:
Friends wedding
Well, I just found out today that I'm approved YEAH!! The surgeon called w/ my date sept 14, 01. Now one of my best friends is getting married on sept 22, 01. He knows I will have just had surgery and wont be able to help in prep, serving, ect. However will I be ready to attend a formal function at 1 week out? Sitting for long times, ect. Any advice would be great. — Jennifer H. (posted on June 26, 2001)

Jennifer, I don't know which surgery you are having. Recovery times differ
for each. Personally, I had Open RNY, and I felt pretty wiped out until
the 9th day post-op. Until then, I didn't stay out of bed (Hospital Bed
that could allow you to sit up) for more than 30 - 45 minutes at a time.
The only way I could have attended a wedding on the 7th day was if it had
been in my Living Room. Of course, my BMI was about 51.0 at surgery, and
I'm sure that has some effect on how quickly you can bounce back.
Possibly, you will have a less-invasive surgery, or maybe you are not as
big as I was, or maybe you just recover more quickly than I. Good luck to
you in your upcoming surgery, as well as your ability to attend this
wedding !!! Kevin

Jennifer, I had open vbg and was told not to drive until I'd had the
staples out. However, I have an annual "shopping trip" reunion
with college buddies that I refused to miss. 8 days out and I drove 150
miles and shopped all day, spent the night and shopped some more before
driving home. I was uncomfortable but not miserable. My friends knew I had
to take it slow so we took our time. Just pace yourself and don't do more
than you can handle.

Hi Jennifer,
I had an open BPD/Ds and 10 days later I was attending an outing for Cub
Scouts. I found a spot under a tree and sat and watched. If you are feeling
up to it than I would think you could attend for a while since all you're
doing is sitting. Dsn't mean you have to stay for the reception or at least
the entire reception. Make sure you drink sips of water and have something
you can eat-even if string cheese. Best wishes and good luck with your
surgery.
