It was easy to fix my credit, and I had to in order to purchase our house.
All I did was get a free copy of my credit report (everyone can get one
free copy once a year from a written request sent to TRW). I then went over
my credit report and looked for any late marks. Then I called any vendors
that showed late payments, discussed why I was late (or made up an excuse),
and had them remove the mark. 9 out of 10 vendors cleared the late marks, 1
couldn't as it was too long ago for her to change, but wrote me a letter
instead, saying I no longer have bad credit with them. (and viola' you
have instant good credit again)
To get good credit, you must build it up, (unfortunately) this means either
finance a purchase (i.e. a car), or apply for a credit card. Even if the
card has only a $500 limit, if you charge something and pay it off, the
company reports that you have paid in full, and your credit limits keep
going up. You can also get free credit counseling, as listed in the
telephone book or as seen on TV if you are behind in payments. But you can
also speak directly to the vendor and request an alternative payment plan
if you are behind.
Get the free report! Everyone should know what is on their credit report,
and stay on top of it at least once a year to be sure there are no false
reportings!
