Question:
anyone eating ham as a post op?

I ate a small portion of a ham salad sandwich and had stomach cramps for 12 hours. When the cramps went away my stomach was so sore....it felt like I was punched. I would imagine it was from either the ham or the mayo that was used, but I don't want to eat ham again if this is going to happen. I really don't eat mayo by itself and will stay away from that if it was the culprit. However, I do like ham but am afraid to try it again because the pain was unbearable. Anyone out there able to eat ham without problems?    — margaret M. (posted on April 12, 2004)

I could eat thin slices of deli ham at about months with no problems. Mayo on the other hand - mircle whip light - was another story. It made me very sick. I think it is the fat. I have since bought fat free - but have not tried it yet.

I am almost 9 months post op, and I still do not tolerate ham. Not regular sliced, not deli sliced. Infact I am one of the few who can't tolerate deli meat at all! I have had mayo many times in egg salads and such and never personally experienced a problem. You could try again in a few months. Sometimes, foods that use to make you sick are fine, after you are a little further out. For me, I probably won't eat ham again for a VERY long time. I have tried it multiple times and was very ill each time.

I am 2 years 4 months post-op and I still can not eat ham. I have tried several times and it makes me sick every time. It's one of those things you will have to try for yourself, we're all different.

I eat all kinds of meat, but when I eat the processed lunch meats, like salami and bologna UGH!, I get like you just did and it hurts! I just stick to the cook it yourself meats. Good luck!

I am tolerating ham well. Good thing because we have like 5 pounds left over. LOL. Try the ham w/o bread or mayo and see if it's what bothered you.

I cannot tolerate Ham, Chicken, steak....or most proteins except fish. However, I have never experienced what you have described. Usually the discomfort goes away within an hour and there is certainly no lingering pain. WEird. I'm agreeing wiht whomever suggested food poisoning.

I do okay with ham, it's just not my fave. Had some yesterday with Easter dinner and it was fine. Maybe the bread from the sandwich is what did you in. I do okay with bread, but usually don't eat it - and if I do it's usually toasted. But some people say it can ball up in their pouches. I have not had a problem with mayo either, and I eat the real stuff, less sugar and carbs that way. I don't use alot so the fat content is usually not a problem.

Check to see if it is "sugar" cured, that could be a problem. I have to watch that really close. Hugs;

Might have been the bread, too-- I know that even a small amount of bread (even the ones that are loaded with fiber) tend to swell up in my pouch and that is painful! I haven't had a problem with ham but I don't eat it that often. I have never tried Miracle Whip, just a little mayo.

I eat ham with no problem at all but any bread, other than the low carb wheat bread, gives me real problems. It feels like I swallowed a big ball.

I tolerate ham just fine, but the salt makes me retain water and swell my hands & feet so it is a rare treat. when I have had bad stomach cramps it was from poor chewing. years ago when I had a gall bladder ham salad nearly killed me w/ a bad gall bladder attack, it was so bad I thought I had food poisoning, painful cramps, vomiting etc. (this was way pre WLS)

I've never had a problem with ham. Pork is a whole nother story...but ham has always been fine. That cramping and pain may have just been some kind of fluke...I still get certain things that wont agree wtih me one time and is fine the next.

Hi, I've never had trouble with deli ham, baked ham or actually any kind of pork or bacon. Pork chops are better for me than steak at times. I sometimes get a little diarrhea from fat like butter or mayo but never any pain. I keep a little fat in my diet on purpose to keep myself "moving". I think that this may just be one of your individual sensitivities, unfortunately.

When you have a problem with a food you should stay away for at least 2 weeks. Then try ham be itself, no mayo. Try a very small pcs. See what happens.

I can NOT eat ANY type of Pork. I was the sickest I have been since my surgery after eating a Pork chop. ( I did wait about a month and tried it again--- same results). Bacon was OK for a while---and now I don't tolerate any of it.-- It am amazed how different people tolerate different things. Best of luck. Mindy Post-op 1 year 315/224/???

I just had to reply, because I'm eating some ham at this very moment! Leftover canned ham slice with a fried egg...yum. It's going to be hard to determine whether it was the ham, mayo, or bread that made you feel so bad. However, you may find that if you try any of those things in the future it will sit well. Pouches are funny things. I've had foods make me feel terrible one time, and other times they've been fine.
