Question:
I tried the Propel water by Gatorade, and it's really good.

There are 10 calories and 3 grams of carbohydrate per 8 fluid ounces. The sweetener is sucralose. Do you think this is still a good choice for meeting fluid requirements? — raye (posted on January 14, 2004)

No!
The reason it has calories, and carbs, is that it also contains fructose, which is fruit sugar. Drinking this stuff all the time will raise your sugar tolerance level, and slow your weight loss.
If you can't handle plain water, try it with a couple slices of lemon, lime or cucumber. If you must have it sweet, try a *little* DaVinci SF syrup, or unsweetened KoolAid with Splenda.
Propel may be okay for an occasional treat, but *not* for everyday consumption, IMNHO. Diet Sparkling Ice, or homemade sodas from seltzer, and DaVinci SF syrup are still better treats, tho.

Propel is sweetened with Splenda, an artificial sweetener, NOT fructose (fruit sugar). It's a great choice for a change from plain water.

I drank propel for a long time after WLS, I still do occasionally. It does NOT contain fructose, it's sweetened with splenda. It was also recommended by my surgeon and nutritionist. I also drink Fruit2O which is great, also sweetened with splenda, and has ZERO calories and carbs. I think it tastes a little better than Propel. Also okayed by my Dr for use as my water requirements. What is NOT recommended is anything carbonated. Carbonation can irritate the pouch and it also depletes the calcium in our bodies. Just my 2 cents. OPen RNY 5/15/03 down 107 lbs.

I drink Propel all the time. It's too sweet for me straight so I dilute it with spring water 50/50. I get more water in and less of the carbs. I think it's a great choice for fluids. I also do the same thing with the Fruit20 and now they have Fruit20 Plus which is vitamin fortified. (I found that at Sams Club). Happy drinking...

I asked my surgeon the same question about 4 weeks ago and he said that unless you aren't taking your vitamins, Propel is nothing more than expensive water and not necessary. Sometimes I find that flavored water is easier to get in than plain water some days but I agree with him. It is expensive and after a while the sweetness started to bother me and is almost intolerable like some protein shakes are now. Your body can only absorb so much of each vitamin before the rest gets wasted so why add the extra calories and carbohydrates if you don't have to?

I also noticed that since Propel is intended to be a sports drink that it tended to make me retain a lot of fluid when used on a daily basis.Try Fruit2o its delicious and doesnt make you hold fluid.
