Hi Lynn, I also was a revision from VBG to RNY in July 2002. I had a problem with water in the very beginning, if it was too cold or I drank it too fast (or both!) it would hit my new pouch like a bomb. I would get a little queasy and sometimes there would be a little rumbling going on in there. What I found worked for me was to drink room temp water thru a straw. My dr didn't have a straw restriction, but I've read where some do. Anyway, it only lasted the first couple of months. I can drink it ice cold now and while I can't actually gulp or chug it, I do just fine with getting at least the 64 oz I need, sometimes more.

I also had a problem getting water down. It hurt sooo bad.... no matter if I drank it slow, warm, cold or whatever, it HURT!!!!! The Dr. told me he had never heard of that before and acted like he didnt really beleive me. Even a few in the chat room here got kind of nasty about it with me, saying I wasnt trying hard enough and all. But I know what you are talking about. I just decided to ride it out and nearly dehydrated. I found out that the Sonic Drive -In has ice that is about the size of small erasers... its very soft, I would go there and buy a whole bag of it... it wasnt but like $1.00, and thats how I got my water in, I ATE it.... I dont know where you live, and if they have Sonic there, but I know SOme Jack's does also. If you could find a place that serves that kind of ice, you might want to try that. Oh, Hardee's has it at some stores.... That lasted about 2 months I think, maybe a little more... but now I can drink like any normal person...I hope this helps you. I just wanted to know that I wasnt the only one that water hurt. Best of luck to you!

I'm with Ali on this one. I could only drink water(or anything for that matter) that was room temp. And I still drink from a straw. If I didnt, I would never get my liquids in. Good luck. ~Sidney~ Open RNY 10-23-02 under goal

I also had/have problems drinking water. I put some of my "methods" on my profile. One thing that works for me now is to drink with the bottle tipped up like I am chugging and then swallow one more time after the last swallow with my head still tipped up. For some reason it keeps me from getting that gross, balled up feeling in my pouch. I guess the last swallow was getting stuck halfway or something.
Also, I find it easier to drink green tea or anything else that is watery but not water. I don't know why it goes down better, but green tea is supposed to good for you anyway so it works for me.
And don't sweat it if you don't get EXACTLY 64 oz of water in every day. I went for a long time drinking no more than 16 oz or so. Just do the best you can and keep trying stuff until you find something that works for you!

HUGS! I also had trouble with water in the begining - and could not get down all the water I needed. I had trouble if it was cold or hot(then it hurt). I also could not stand tap water (which I used to love). I drank room temperature kool aid sweetened with splenda and was able to get my fluid intake up that way. Also used sugar-free popciscles to get in more fluids. Maybe give that a try. Eventually I was able to drink more. Now (3 months post op) I can drink plain water and can get all my water in, but still have trouble if it is too cold or too hot. Wishing you all the best.... do what you can, things will get better.

I'm nine months out, and still can't drink more than about 6 ounces of plain water without feeling icky. Like others have said, warm liquids are MUCH easier to drink, so I drink decaf coffee and decaf tea throughout the day. I also drink room temperature Crystal Light. The only time I drink plain water is to take my morning and night vitamins, and even then, it can't be very cold.

I am almost at a year (on Jan 7th) and I still cannot drink much water. I am doing somewhat better but nowhere near 64 oz. I usually eat sf popsicles to quench my thirst.

Hello and Happy New Year. I had trouble with cold water in the first four months, but now no problems thus far. Now, not only can I drink it, I can take gulps of it and rarely ever have a problem. Most things change in time. Rosa 07/09/03 300/219/180-140
