Question:
Nyquil and Post Op
I am current pre-op and have a nasty bug and Nyquil is my only consolation at night so that I can get some rest. Can we still take Nyquil Liquid after surgery? Thanks! — Tiffany B. (posted on October 31, 2003)

It has sugar in it and could cause you to dump if you end up being
sensistive to sugar. You should discuss it with your Doc.

Yes you can take it. I got a bad cold a few weeks post op and my surgeon
said it was fine to take and I had no problems.

I worst dumping experience I ever had was because of Nyquil. I took it
before bed at 1 week post op and I woke up about 30 minutes later thinking
I was having a heart attack. My heart was pounding and I was very
nauseous. It passed in about 20 minutes. I have not taken it since that
time. Haven't really needed to. Good Luck.

I have been sick twice since surgery and used Nyquil both times. I didn't
dump but I am sure it is a possibility. It will make you VERY tired almost
immediately. Kind of like alcohol effects. :0)

I had surgery a year ago. I've thrown up only twice during that time and
on both occasions it was due to Nyquil. However, they do make some liquid
cold medicines that are sugar free. They are marketed for diabetics. I've
had good luck with them. Best of Luck!

Well...it contains sugar AND alcohol. I would say, take it only if
absolutely necessary...may cause dumping. A shot of tequila might also do
the trick :)

I hate the taste of the liquid so I take the gelcaps and have since about
post-op month 2. I've had no problems with taking them and it's certainly
helped in curing my coughs and colds.

Hi Tiffany! I've taken Nyquil for what I thought might be the flu. I'm
very sensitive to sugar, and I didn't dump. That's just my experience
though; it did make me sleepy and I slept really well. It's kind of an
individual thing, though. Some of the other posters have dumped on it, so
you won't know til you try it. Good luck!

Hi Tiffany,
Yes, I've taken it a couple of times now. Although I'm a DS post-op, so
maybe that would be different, if you're an RNY pre-op... gosh, maybe it
would possibly make you dump. Should probably ask your doc!
Blessings,
dina

Try Liquid Tylenol Cold Medicine!
Because RNY patients have almost immediate absorption, Nyquil can cause
dumping, or overmedication quite quickly. Always recommend you check with
your surgeon, but I would suggest you take one capsule, or 1/4 - 1/2 of the
liquid recommended dosage and see how your body reacts. For us RNY
patients, it is medically ok to take from most surgeons (they prefer liquid
Tylenol Cold). I tried the blue color (regular) and had no problems other
than feeling a bit tipsy. I tried the red colored Nyquil (daytime) and
spent the greater part of the day throwing up (but I did forget I had a
cold while I was dumping!). Its a bit of a crap shoot with our bodies. If
you are miserable, try it of the Tylenol Cold Formulas. I always recommend
that you try to obtain the Diabetic Formula's, as they are sugar free and
greatly reduce your risk of dumping. Good luck, and feel better soon! ~

I take the gelcaps, my surgeon told me to take those instead of the
liquids. :-) i haven't had any problems with them.
