Question:
Can you still eat spicy foods?
The guacamole question got me thinking. Can you still eat spicy (almost fire hot) foods post-op? If you couldn't tell from my last name I'm hispanic, and hot foods are pretty much a staple. Can your pouch still handle the heat? If not I don't know how I'd get used to not eating peppers, hot sauces & chilies. What'd you guys do? Thanks — vllgmz4 (posted on September 12, 2003)

Hiya! Great question. I eat more spicy hot foods now then ever before. I
crave hot stuff. I eat Jalepenos in big quantities. and banana peppers and
hot sauce! I did not start till 5 monhts post op but handle it well.
Everyone is different so give it a try! Good Luck!

I was worried about that too pre-op. I am now 11 months postop and spicy
foods are not a problem with me. I love spicy mexican and thai foods.
Everyone is different, but I would give it a try.

I'm nine months post op and snack on mild banana peppers all the time I go
through two or three jars a week. No sugar, no fat, no problems.

I was shocked when my surgeon told me on my one week post-op visit that I
could have Spicy V-8 or Snappy Tom -yum! I have a long history of stomach
problems (much improved post-op!) but nothing spicy has bothered me since
surgery and that's a big help when you inevitably become weary of
"sweet" stuff - jello, popsicles, etc. Good luck!

Before surgery I really didn't like spicy foods or raw tomatoes. Not I
always want them both!! It is funny how you change. The only draw is if it
doesn't agree with you but if it does go for it. 6/27/03 292/230/???

Estela~ You'll still be able to enjoy all your favorite spicy foods! I,
like you, have always had spicy foods be pretty much a staple in my diet.
I couldn't cook without peppers, cayene, chili, etc. (lol) For the first
couple of months, I avoided the spicy foods until I was really getting back
into solid foods, but now ~~ Couldn't live without my menudo, homemade
salsa, spicy chinese & homegrown peppers. Bring on the spice....gotta
have it!! Open RNY 1/3/03 330/205/175

In my own personal experience, it's not that spicy foods 'hurt' your new
stomach. It's more like my tastes have changed and I just don't like some
of the things I used to. This is a wild phenomenon...how drastically your
tastes change. I have lost all desire for some of the 'bad' foods I used
to so enjoy. Bread and pasta...stuff like that.

I'm 3 months postop and around 6 weeks postop I started to crave spicy
foods.I've been drinking the picante spicy V8 juice and eating kraft's new
hot pepper cheese without any problem.

Thanks to all of you guys. I was starting to worry that I'd have to eat
bland food for the rest of my life. Just hope I can still eat hot food
later. Estela

From the time I started my pureed foods stage at 2 weeks post op, refried
beans, cheese and 'hot' hot sauces was what I had for breakfast every
morning. I figured if I watered down the beans enough with the sauce then
that 'counted' as pureed!
