Question:
Why would a protein drink occassionally cause symptoms similar to dumping?

This has happened to me twice now, with two different protein drinks. After drinking my protein drink rather quickly, within about 15 minutes I began to feel nauseus, and sweat profusely. I also had diarrhea. Why does this occur? If I drink it at a slower pace, I don't have these symptoms. Does anyone else have this reaction, and do you know why? — raye (posted on August 14, 2003)

Are you making them with Milk or water? If you are using milk it could be lactose intolerance.

Nausea and vomiting: If this occurs after eating a new food, wait several days before trying it again. It may be necessary to go back to more liquid or pureed foods for a while. You may be eating too fast, too much, or not chewing enough. Remember to avoid sweets.

Dumping Symptoms: Try dry meals (liquids separated from meals) that are low in simple sugars/sweets. Lie down immediately after eating if symptoms persist.

Diarrhea: Remember to avoid sugars and sweets and drink lactase-treated milk. Limit high fiber and greasy foods and avoid very hot or very cold foods and beverages

Information taken from: http://www.uclabariatrics.mednet.ucla.edu/recovery/recovery_rdiet_probsol.htm

This happens to me, even at 2 years out, but I don't know why. The Nectar brand does not do it, but the "milky shake" variety will. I mix w/ water, so it's not the lactose. Strange.

This happens to me too. I only mix with water so its not that. I've tried 4 different brands of protein shake and it may do fine the first couple of times I drink it then WHAM! I'm ill! Most kinds make me gag (really gag not just saying that) so its hard on me when I find one that I can get down, drink for several days then get sick off it. And my weight loss has slowwwed way down. I know its becasue I'm not getting in all my protein. Wish I knew why this happens to some people and I wish it didnt happen to me. Good luck to you. ~Sidney~ Open RNY 10-23-02 down 110+ and counting

I have found that I do this too... and have discovered that it depends on what I have had BEFORE the shake as to whether or not I dump on a shake!! We dump on sugar, but we also dump on too many carbs... or at least I do. Double check your carbs, what you have had to eat before the shake (even if it has been a couple of hours!), and adjust from there. It is weird, but it happens!! Good Luck!

Have you tried any soy or egg based protein drinks? I get similar symptoms from whey based proteins, whey is a milk solid and if you have trouble with milk this could be the culprit. Many whey based protein drinks state they do contain lactose. Good luck!
