Question:
Dump on Cheerios and Milk at Six Months???

I just passed six months and to date I have not dumped at all. I have avoided sugar steadfastly but because I've had it inadvertently in foods I have assumed I simply don't dump. I drank Lactaid for about 3 months but after having cereal with skim milk a couple of times without dumping, felt that was unnecessary and switched back to regular skim milk. I usually don't eat cereal but like it on Sundays when my family is eating together and reading the paper. Today I had 2 small bowls Cheerios (regular, no sugar) and skim milk and afterwards felt extremely nauseous (like I was going to throw up but didn't) and shaky. Very very yucchy. Is this dumping? Why would it occur now and not previously especially if I haven't been that sensitive to foods?    — susanje (posted on July 13, 2003)

I would have gotten sick from the combination of liquids and solids....anytime I do not follow the 30 / 30 ( no liquids 30 minutes prior to and 30 minutes agfter foods)rule I feel queasy and my heart races. If I am going to have cereal I use just enough milk to wet it, but since there is little protein except in certain cereals I just try and avoid it all together. Good luck to you!

I feel that way after overeating. MPO only, I think two bowels of cereal, even small ones is too much at one time. Cut back the next time and see if it has the same effect. No, I don't think you had a true dumping experience.

I think you are correct. Normally I have one small bowl but today I did what I did presurgery, mindlessly pour another bowl while reading the paper. I usually only have cereal on Sundays and usually one small bowl which doesn't bother me. I think it was a matter of eating too much. Thanks.

Yep... you are dumping!! I sometimes dump on one thing and two days later have it again and don't dump... so, it is entirely possible. Also... is it possible you might be pregnant?? I thought I was dumping on milk and ended up being pregnant!!! Just a thought....!

I do not usually dump on anything anymore. But I have and do ALWAYS dump on cereal. Don't know why, but I do. I thought for a while it was the milk, but I can drink a glass of milk and be fine. Who knows.

To clarify why i don't think you dumped but just overate. Dumping is more than just nausea. You have palpations, jitters, faint feeling, sometimes profuse sweating and Also nausea and sometimes diarreha. A lot of people think they are dumping when actually they are not. Once you do it, you will pray to never do it again. believe you me, you will know it.

Cereal did this to me until I was about 9-10 months out. I think it's the sugar in the milk and the cereal (starch) converts to sugar in the body. Sometimes cheese dip or a lot of cheese still makes me feel nausous for a while. I eat oatmeal with 2%milk and splendid every morning now for breakfast and I feel good. I think it's just where you are in time postop and that'll change. I sometimes try to think like someone with diabetes and how they would eat. Starches are somewhat bad for us too, becuase they make our blood sugar go higher for a bit, given us that shaky, ecky feeling. Drink some water when this happens. That usually evens me out for some reason. Good luck, Melisa RNY 08/15/02 -100 lbs

I am 2 yrs out Aug 10, and milk still makes me dump, BUT I absolutely love it. My dumping symptoms from milk is extreme tiredness, so I have learned that if I want a big glass of milk or a nice bowl of cold cereal, I eat it just before bedtime and then I don't have to worry about the symptoms of dumping....I go sound asleep....
