Question:
I need feedback on my food choices.

I suspect I'm doing fine but my nutritionist is on vacation and I've made a few changes in my eating habits the last 2-3 weeks. I'm nearly 4 months post lap RNY (proximal), started at 311 and now at 240. I do cardio 6 days a week, weights 3 days a week, taking in between 600-1000 calories per day. I feel really good and strong, like a new person. I have recently been eating a more balanced diet instead of it being so high in protein and low in carbs. Here is what I've been eating: for breakfast @ about 6AM, Pro-Score 100 protein shake(32g of protein) and a banana or apple, for lunch @ about 1PM 3/4 cup of pinto beans and 3/8 cup of brown rice, for dinner @about 6PM, 3-4 oz of filet mignon and 1/4 cup of broccoli. I may also have another 1-2 oz of filet mignon or another protein shake later in the evening if I haven't gotten enough protein or calories in. I drink 4 liters of water per day and sometimes 5 if possible. I also take a multi, sublingual B12, Actigall, dry Vit. E, 1000mg of calcium citrate. (My latest labs show an elevated calcium, so per my surgeon, I only take calcium twice a day.)Does anyone have any comments or suggestions? I just need some reassurance that I'm not going to screw this up.    — lizinPA (posted on May 23, 2003)

Beth, you sound like you're doing wonderful! You're not gonna screw this up, we all have that fear ofcourse. If I can make some suggestions. I think you need to eat more. I don't mean getting in more calories persay, but eat more frequently and maybe more variety so you don't get bored? You're only doing one shake and 2 meals, and possibly a 3rd once in a while it seems. You should eat ATLEAST 3 times a day, plus a shake or two. Or break your meals into smaller amounts and eat 5 times a day- that is great for our metabolism and you won't feel hungry (in case you do now) There's nothing wrong with eating rice and beans, but beans alone have a great deal of carbs in them, so I would maybe use 1/2 the rice instead. B/c right now, the rice and bean meal is giving you atleast 60grams of carbs, and for one meal that is quite a lot. I eat carbs as well, I believe moderation is the key, but I do make sure to eat protein first and more of it. For instance, I will eat 2-3oz of fish and then have green beans and 1/8 cup of mashed potatoes. My main rule for myself is protein first and never more than 20grams carbs per meal. But everyone has different views on carbs, and if that is the only carb you're eating all day, that's fine too. But you sound like you're doing well, goodluck to you :-)
