Question:
For those of you who follow Atkins or similar diets postop, do you disregard fat?

I haven't read any books, I've just been looking online and reading articles on Atkins.com, but it all says don't try to do it and still eat lowfat, because that will stunt your weightloss. Do y'all follow it and not worry about the high fat content in some of the foods and recipes suggested? I'm trying to watch carbs while not going overboard on fat, but I'm confused. On the Atkins diet and other low carb diets, the body turns to fat when no carbs are available to burn for fuel. This includes DIETARY fats. Ergo, if you are consuming high fat foods, your body will burn them instead of body fat, which is the goal. It isn't necessary to eat fat-free but do watch the fat grams.

I guess my surgeon's plan is along the lines of an Atkins diet. His plan uses ketosis to the maximum which means very little carbs. I am 15 weeks out and eat 4 oz per meal, 3 meals. I typically eat my meals as total protein or very close. There are a few protein sources I use that have a small amount of carbs in them. I occassionally have some veggies or fruit but not necessarily every day. I get in around 50-60 grams of protein a day. My plan does allow up to 30 grams of carbs a day, but most days I do not eat that much. I also do not worry too much about fat, however in general I make pretty reasonable to low fat choices in my proteins. I rarely would make a high fat choice just because I do not want to risk dumping or anything similar. <p>The benefit of my surgeon's plan, for me, is that because it uses ketosis to the max it is not that important to get in lots of protein. At the 50-60 grams that I get in I am way ahead of 99% of the support group because they are having the greater portion of carbs through veggies and fruit. Since I have a lot to lose I want to get as much fat off as possible while I can get the most out of the ketosis. It's important to be careful to get in enough fluid when in max ketosis to push the ketones out of your body. I've lost 95 lbs so far, so I don't see where my weightloss is stunted. One of the problems I've always had with people who do Atkins is they seem to think it is a license to eat as much fat as they can absorb - a lb or bacon etc. To me that is insane and disgusting. I think my pouch would revolt. It revolted when I ate some breakfast sausages at about 5 weeks. I have eaten bacon but like 3 pieces of center cut so that it was leaner.

That's correct, I did Atkins pre-op and read the entire book. Atkins does not want you to be concerned with the fat at all! I am 7 months post op and have been following Atkins (a stricter version, even less carbs) and still have never concerned myself with the fat. My weight loss has been very quick and steady.

I dont' count fat grams, but early on I did but only because I dumped on it. Would rather dump on sugar lol.
