Question:
I am 3 months post op and wanted to know if anyone has had a glass of wine and dumped
I have a get together tomorrow night which i would like to have a glass of wine at. I have been told that other then being a cheap drunk, there are no other side effects when drinking. Does anyone have any stories? — Philippa F. (posted on April 9, 2003)

Our nutritionist gave us a strict warning not to consume alcohol for the
entire first year to avoid damage to the pouch.

Wine can make you dump because of the sugar content. I know the amount of
sugar I dump on, so I know what I can and cannot have. I'm sure you are
aware, but alcohol cannot be processed in our stomachs, so it is much
harder on our livers. But my surgeon said alcohol in moderation is okay.
Every surgeon is different, some say wait a year, some say 6 months. I do
not think 1 glass of wine will kill you. But just take it slow, incase you
may dump and ofcourse getting drunk faster. I had my first glass of wine
about 5 months post-op and got drunk off 2oz. LOL Goodluck to you :-)

Wine can make you dump, although it doesnt with me. I just get drunk a lot
quicker. I tried just one glass the other night and boy did I feel it. If
you watch reruns of the Andy Griffith Show, watch the episode called Aunt
Bee's Medicine Man. One glass of wine and I was acting just as goofy as
Aunt Bee when she drank that Indian Elixir:)

Assuming you're allowed wine (I won't preach to you about not following
your surgeon's orders), I would suggest a very dry red or white wine. They
have the least sugar in them. Try a chardonnay or a merlot, only have half
a glass, and sip very slowly. You can have a glass or water next to it and
sip on both. And whatever you do, don't drive afterward. Enjoy!
