Question:
Does anyone ever eat the meat from a fast food hamburger?
I don't want to go back to my old ways, but lately I've been eating the meat from fast food hamburgers. I don't eat the bun. I am 8 weeks post op and have lost 39.5lbs. I was wondering if anyone else does this? I usually eat out for lunch and there don't seem to be many fast food options. Sometimes I feel so guilty because I think of fast food as helping me become morbidly obese. — Alicia K. (posted on March 27, 2003)

Hi, I'm not sure I have the best advice, but is it possible to not eat out?
Try bringing your lunch with you. In my opinion, the meat from a fast
food hamburger is not the healthiest choice for protein, especially if it
is ground beef. When I get the craving for a hamburger, I use Jennie-O
turkey burgers with low fat cheese. They are just as tasty as McDonald's
and Burger King, but much more healthier. I hope this helps.

Why don't you go for a grilled chicken sandwich and toss away the roll?
If there's a Wendy or Burger King, why don't you get the chili? Also,
you could always get a salad with some low-fat dressing. There are
healthier food choices at fast food places than the greasy horsemeat that
passes for burgers at most fast-food places...JR

Theres nothing wrong with burger patties. Did you know Wendys chil a
favorite among new posties is reject burgers? If a burger breaks or
crumbles during cooking it goes in the chil pot. I wouldnt suggest a diet
based on burgers but its not as bad as some think.Besides it all protein.

Bob - yes, I realize where Wendy's gets the beef for their chili. I also
happen to know that they boil the beef before it gets added to the chili to
reduce the fat content...JR

Alicia, I will eat McD burgers sometimes, too. I did feel guilty sometimes,
and although there is nothing "normal" about this surgery, I
would like to try and live like a normal thin person. At 10 months, I can
eat 2/3 of the cheeseburger and just a little of the bread. It's not
horrible, but I wouldn't do it everyday. McD's also makes salads with
chicken now, or like John said chili. These foods are all higher in fat
than what we could normally eat at home, but if you have to eat out, you
have to atleast eat! Goodluck to you.

I'm about a yr and half out but have been eating small Micky'D's burgers
since about 8 months out. I can/could eat the whole thing and a few of my
hubby's fries without problem. I don't do it often...maybe every few
months..unlike my weekly 2 double cheese burgers, supersized fry and 2
apple pie indulgance pre-op ;) -Kim open RNY 7/17/01 -152lbs

I'm a year postop and for the last month, I've been eating burgers from
Checkers (had one today in fact) eating the meat and toppings and throwing
away the bread. I know its crazy, but boy do I feel guilty! It's nothing
necessarily wrong with it, but like you I don't want to revert to my old
ways and try to eat healthier foods. If you have to eat out, there is
always the salad and grilled chicken. I guess its better that the majority
of time we stick with the healthier choices as that is what will keep
weight off in the long run. Now let me be able to take my own advice!

Alicia,
You've done no harm, you have to eat, just make wise choices, and you have,
you could have had Fried Fish, or something of that nature, I just recently
gave into a Mc Donald's hamburger, No cheese, and ate the whole thing ,
bread, meat and all. Filled me up and was satisfied. I try to make wise
choices and know that it's not an everyday thing, and that if I do it one
day, I account for it on my journal of what I ate for the ( I was calorie
counting what I ate) Anything and everything can be eaten and the main
thing that needs to be stressed is that it needs to be done in moderation,
and not excessive. You'll learn this latter on down the road to your WLS,
use this time now to train yourself and you'll be fine, be strict and
you'll have awesome results.
Seeing you're 8 weeks post op I would opt for protien shakes, and stay
clear from the hamburger, You'll loose it faster. Just a helpful hint, no
scolding here, we're all human SMILE :)

I am a manager for McDoanld's. I eat the meat from the burgers without the
bun sometimes and it does not seem to hinder my weight loss. It is protein
and it doesn't make me sick. I try to make my meals to take with me, but
that is not always possible because sometimes I work up to 12 hours a day
so I have to eat from there. I am 3 1/2 months and down 85lbs.

Alicia, I eat 3-4 cheeseburgers (w/out the buns) a week. I love beef.
However, I barely ever go to McD's...The reason is b/c of it being fried
and the added fat. I prefer 93% lean burger patties. Good Luck! Heather

I have eaten just the meat from fast food hamburgers quite a few times
throughout my 8 months. My family likes fast food occasionally so I feel
they shouldn't be denied ever having it, because of me. But I do try to
limit how often we do the fastfood thing. I know having the breadless
burger is probably better than having french fries or something of that
nature but I know that although it's meat, it's still fairly greasy and
can't be all that healthy. So I try not to do it all that often. If you
go out everyday during your work week I would think it may become a problem
if you are eating it that often. But I know there ARE healthier choices,
even at fast food places. Try to go for a grilled chicken sandwich without
the bread. Also the chicken salads are good, just use the dressing
sparingly. As far as a fried fish sandwich as someone else suggested, I
have heard they have a lot more calories than even a Big Mac so I wouldn't
go that route if I were you. Stick to things that aren't fried. Look for
grilled if possible or salads and try to keep your fastfood restaurant
trips to a minimum. You didn't say why you go out for lunch. Maybe you
could try bringing a lunch once in a while and going someplace nice (like a
park) to enjoy it. I hope that helps. Good luck!

Wendys boils the beef to get out the fat for chili? Thats a new one for me.
We rnyers dont absorb all the fat we eat. I think any food is OK in
MODERATTION. Its not one oreo, its when you eat too many like the entire
package pre op.

I've had trouble eating the burger meat, but I'm only 2 months out. If you
want to know the fat/protien ratio, go to the corporate website of the fast
food place (ie. McDonalds.com) they list all their foods there.
Personally, I'm pretty happy with the breakfast sandwiches for protein. I
eat the egg/cheese off and my 6 year old eats the rest. It's the perfect
split!
Best of luck!

I have trouble with greasy foods. I can eat a hamburger but only if it is
made with lean hamburger. Same goes for KFC, I used to love that place now
the thought makes me sick. However, I love Boston Market chicken now and
they will let you get a kids meal there. You can have chicken a side and
the corn bread (I only eat a little of the cornbread) for only $2.29.
Wendy's has a lot that we can have like the chili and grilled chicken
salads. Subway wraps are great too. A wrap has a lot less carbs and seems
to be easir to eat than a roll.
