Question:
Do surgeons turn people down often?
This is probably just jitters: I have my surgeon consultation in 2 days, and I somehow have a fear that I might be turned down for surgery, even though I meet the criteria. I'm 36 BMI with diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol, and some arthritis. My fear is that because I'm not that big, and my comorbidities are pretty well controlled by medication, she might say I don't need the surgery, now that I'm REALLY eager to do it. — sjwilde (posted on March 18, 2003)

I wouldn't worry so much about the surgeon saying "no" as much as
your insurance company. Do you know what their criteria is for WLS? I'd
be calling them and finding out. A surgeon would probably be willing to do
your surgery - you are a good risk, having few serious comorbid conditions
that are controlled, plus you are a lightweight and at less risk for
complications.

From the original poster: I forgot to mention that I'm self-pay. My
insurance specifically excludes treatment for obesity. With a larger BMI
I'd fight it, but I just said screw it and got a home equity loan.

I agree. It's not your surgeon, because you do meet the criteria of >35
and co-morbidities, it's all up to your insurance company. Know their
policy inside and out and good luck with everything!
