Question:
Took multiple antidepressants & all have side effect of sex. dysfunction.

I've tried prozac, wellbutrin, serzone, effexor, zoloft, & other antidepressants over the past 12 years. All have that same side effect of sexual dysfunction. Anyone else have this probelm & then find an anti depressant that worked but did not cause this side effect??? I think I'm needing to get on something again, but don't wanna go thru all the side effect ordeals. Please let me know if you have encountered this probelm & what you did to resolve it. I took them long enough to get out from under the depression & then stopped taking them. At 6 months post-op I am really getting irritable, moody, etcc.. & feel I could benefit from the right one once again. Please feel free to email me. Thanks in advance for your help. I'll be back on in the morning to check for responses.    — Belinda W. (posted on March 10, 2003)

There is a new drug on the market to improve sexual performance for women called Avaril. This may be your answer. Unfortunately Wellbutrin is the drug with the least sexual side effects and you are still affected. Maybe an "enhancer" can help you.

Don't even bother they are very expensive and I've been taking them for about a month and do not see ANY difference. I take Effexor and I do not have an option of NOT taking anything, at the moment anyway.

Have you tried Celexa? I've experienced great relief and no side effects.

I have heard and have experienced a combanation of zoloft and welburtin works very well together to combat the non-sexual side effects. I just take the Zoloft by it self, and have never felt any dysfunction. I'm also in my early thirties and my sex drive has always been very "hungry". Not sure if this helps, but that's my two cents. Good luck! Aimee

I say talk to your doctor. I tried a combination with wellbutrin and swear that the wellbutrin turned me into the wicked *itch. stopped taking it. I still have the sexual dysfunction and that part makes me nuts. I do think however, that part of that is also part of the depression. I asked my doctor about that Alavril (however) you spell it and it's not available through rx, so I don't believe in it. He said he hasn't seen any studies, etc. on it at all yet. I take celexa. I think the one I took that totally didn't bother me was Serzone and they don't give that one anymore. Ask your prescribing doctor and tell him/her of your troubles.

I have been in the medical field for a while now, I know what the stats say but I also know what the patients say..For the most part Wellbutrin is the least likely to cause weight gain, but can mess with the blood pressure and Zoloft is the least likely to cause sexual side effects. Everyone reacts to medications differantly, so what may cause an effect with one may not cause with another. Good Luck.

Have you tried celexa, or its newer version, lexapro? Worth a try. :)

For what it's worth, Viagra often works for women. It might be worth asking your doctor for a sample pack.

It's important to have a good psychiatrist to find an anti-depressant that works for you with side effects you can tolerate. Each person is unique. It takes a specialist to know what to prescribe. Don't be afraid to discuss your past experiences. Many others have had the same problems. There is hope. Good luck.

I had a lot of side effects too, although Effexor didn't bother me. Remeron is a fairly new antidepressant that deosn't usually have the sexual side effects. It can cause weight gain though -- it seems like there's always some catch!

Celexa! It takes about a month to really start working, but it's made my life SO much happier :).

The one I take now is Lexapro. It is made by the same company as Celexa and is similar to it but Lexapro is longer lasting and takes a shorter amount of time to get into your bloodstream. I have been on many combinations such as Wellbutrin and Effexor. The Wellbutrin brings back the sex drive that the Effexor took away. Good luck to you.
