Question:
PLEASE give me idea's of how much you can eat post-op/2weeks

Yes Guys, it's me again. I would love to know the following about you and your experiences. 1)how much you were able to eat/drink at 2wks post op? 2)did you start feeling full once you went on to more solid foods? 3)what's your favorite protein shake recipe ****As ususal I'm worried I'm eating too much and not feeling full and I want to get a grip on it before it's too late. I've seen people post that they get full with 3-4 sips of water/crystal lite...not me, I could drink much more quickly than I do but I make myself stop. I'm eating 2-3 cans of lowfat cans of soup(160 cal a can) a day and the VERY bad thing is that I eat my soup in 15-30 minutes. I KNow you are saying then I shouldn't be eating that much but I HONESTLY do feel hungry when I eat. I'm working on distinguishing head hunger from tummy hunger. My DR told me to add scrambled egg and grits to my diet and I'm terrified to do so in fear of not getting that full feeling that I should get when starting to eat more solid foods. Thank you guys for all your help and your patience too lol Josii*    — meltedbuttr (posted on March 7, 2003)

Hi Josii, I just answered another one of your questions. I am 7 1/2 weeks post myself and at two weeks my dr. did not make me do liquids except for four days. On day five I could eat half of a scrambled egg with cheese, unless it was cooked on the softer side then I could eat most of it. I could also eat about 5 bites of grits if they were not soupy. I could eat about the same amount of bites of a baked potato with cheese, butter, sour cream. I eat a lot of cheese. I could drink 4 to 6 oz. of drink at a time as long as I did not gulp. Green beans were good to me, I could eat several bites as long as they were small and I chewed well. I also could eat refried beans at a mexican restaurant, about 6 bites because they are mushy and runny. I could eat half of a small banana dipped in peanut butter. Rice, about 4 bites, slow with a little gravy. Just remember to take small bites and chew well. My dr. is more liberal early on so the pouch does not reject food later. I like that. I can eat all meat without getting sick now, and lettuce. I have done well on everything. I had lap rny. I have lost 42 lbs. so far. Let me know if you need anything.

At 2 weeks post op, I could eat a pre-packaged cheesestick if I let it sit out for a few to soften it up a bit, or stick it in the microwave for 5 seconds.. ummm...I could eat 2 oz's of cottage cheese or mashed potatos with some gravy on it. Ever since the beginning, when drinking, I could continuosly drink without feeling full. My suggestions for you is to eat some more solid stuff..it WILL make you feel full. Soup goes through at a very moderate pace, so it will take a lot more to make you feel full. Even now at over 2 months post op..I can eat about a cup of soup, but only 2 chicken nuggets...Solid food makes a HUGE difference! Good luck to you.

I was famished the first few weeks. Now, at 8.5 weeks, I hardly have any hunger (head hunger on occasion but that's it). I think you should add the eggs and grits. you will feel fuller once you do. My favorite protein drink is Sci Fit or Pro Labs berry drinks (I mix them. I think one is raspberry and one is wild berry) with frozen strawberries. I can't do thick shakes so chocolate and vanilla are out. My fruity drinks are just frothy and thin enough to sip through a straw and really enjoy.

By 2 weeks post-op, I was switching over from full liquids to pureed foods, so at this time I was eating things like 1 scrambled egg w/ cheese for breakfast (and ate most of it). For lunch I had (and still have) something like 2 oz chicken salad or tuna salad or 2 oz chicken breast or 2 oz fish and pretty much the same for dinner. I haven't felt "hunger" since my surgery and I get in about 500 calories per day. Good luck to you! Once you're on regular foods, you'll fill up quicker. Its like a baby who only drinks formula and can't sleep thru the night because he's hungry. Once he starts getting cereals and more solid foods, he's satisfied longer. Same with us! :-)

At 2 weeks I could eat 1/8 to 1/4 cup. Now at almost 5 weeks I eat 1/4 to 3/8 c. and rarely closer to 1/2 cup. I am restricted to protein and a little bit of veggies or fruit (as low carb as possible). I am not allowed to eat grits and potatoes and rice etc. because they are all carbs and will push out bodies out of ketosis. <p>If I was only eating soup I would most likely be hungry too because it's liquid and goes right on through. The full feeling would not last very long. I would try the scrambled eggs, but alone and not with any soup as that will just wash them through and that give you that full feeling. Solid food should help your true hunger. The head hunger is another thing. Fortuntately I have not experienced head hunger so I have had no problem staying with 3 meals. Just keep working with your surgeon and let them know what is going on so they can make adjustments to help you through this. EVERYONE's body and eating program is different so follow your surgeon's plan and not someone elses's!
