Question:
How Do You Increase the Amt of Salad you eat? How much is too much?

I was 8 weeks out on Tuesday. On Wednesday night I was out to eat and tried a portion of the garden salad (lettuce, tomatoes, shaved carrots with light Italian dressing) served before the meal. This was my first lettuce that I had since surgery and I've been dying for a salad for over a month now. I cut it up small and ate slowly. I ate about a quarter of it. It was marvelous and no ill effects. However, I woke up on Thursday craving more salad. However, I don't know how much or how often to eat it at this point. I don't know what it will/can do to my system. Any suggestions?    — susanje (posted on March 7, 2003)

Susan, I ate salad right away, and ate it just about everyday, and had no problems. I would say eat it if you feel like you want it, just ,make sure you are getting in your protien.

I have salad every day with either chicken or tuna with always ceaser dressing. I havnt had any problem and can probably eat about 1 cup of salad...depends on how much protein I add to my salad. Im about 4 months out! and 66 lbs down!

Susan, I have one small suggestion. I try to reverse the normal order and have salad AFTER my protein meal. Salad fills me up way to fast and if I try to eat it first, I get stuffed after a few bites and can't eat my protein.

Hi Susan :). I'm 10 weeks out, and have had entire WEEKS where I craved nothing but salad. When nothing else sounded good, I would eat salad for all my meals and just make sure to get 3 protein drinks each day. I think the most salad I ate at one sitting was about a cup and a half (which probably translates into about 1/3 cup after being chewed up). Just make sure to chew the heck out of it! The thing I craved most was the Italian dressing. I found myself putting it on chicken later LOL. Good luck and be happy that you're wanting to eat something that's good for you :).

LOL SuzAnne! i know what you mean about the Italian dressing! i am 4 1/2 months out now and lately i have been JONESing over Italian dressing! i actually make my own salad with fresh tomatoes, green onions, olive oil, Italian white wine vinegar and lemon juice and OH MY GOODNESS! (i eat it with cottage cheese or chunks of mozzarella or blue) i know it probably sounds boring but there must be something about the sourness of vinaigrette dressing, it is like heaven! i make extra dressing so i can dunk chicken into it, or (i know this is bad) i just drink it straight! how funny is that! i love salads, though. The new fancy salads at Wendy's are my favorites. i add extra chicken and cheese to them. they last for about 3 or 4 days, though (just long enough to get *almost* wilted! ha)! i just put the dressing in a tupperware container.
